Redd Foxx made one of the biggest mistakes that you can possibly imagine when he quit Sanford And Son after only four years. He had this series and Sanford that were quickly cancelled. I just cannot understand how in the world he could have walked away from a series that made him so rich and so successful. TV variety shows usually flop, they have a pretty dismal history in general and this one was no exception. However, it wasn't Redd's fault, he brought his talent and charm and charisma to this show and gave it is all. He was such a pioneer for young black comics. If you ask any one of them who their idols are they will probably say Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy. Redd grew up tough in the streets and brought that into his act. Yes, he was vulgar and blue but he made us laugh. Someone once said that he took profanity and the language of the streets as he knew it and made it almost poetic. One episode of this show that I remember is where the great Joe Louis was the guest star. They made it out like he was going to box Redd. They called it "The Brown Bomber versus The Redd Target"
