- AnecdotesIn his home country the Finnish director Olli Soinio is best known for the successful horror comedy Kuutamosonaatti and its less successful sequel Kuutamosonaatti II: Kadunlakaisijat. His next film Rölli - hirmuisia kertomuksia was a fantasy film mainly aimed for children, but essentially followed the same path by incorporating some darker tones to the lighter storylines. One Finnish critic even called it "trash film for children".

Commentaire à la une
Allan "Allu" Tuppurainen's Rölli character first appeared in feature length film form in "Rölli - Amazing Tales", and to date no other Rölli film has surpassed its awesomeness. The film manages to capture the down to earth feel of the original television-series while at the same time take it beyond with a colourful and humorous cast of characters.
The combination of authentically grimy make-up and costumes, utilization of Finnish nature for the film's setting and the usage of specifically late 80s/early 90s music gives the film a great hypered atmosphere and undoubtedly makes it exciting to watch for children and adults alike. The film also has some hidden adult references but these are thankfully neither dominating nor derailing to the film (unlike say 'The Cat in the Hat'). Instead their subtlety serves the film's over all feeling.
The only slight complaints one could have about the movie is that its narrative, while dramatic and well paced is not perhaps very original and there undoubtedly is a pretty blatant environmentalist under-current to the movie. Also, the physical appearance of the "Trashers" loses the comical double-meaning these characters had in the original television series, but as their Evil Cult adds to the drama of the film, I can't complain too much.
Best of all, the base essentials of what makes a Rölli movie worth watching, Allu Tuppurainen's physical performance and songs are also in place and definitely add to the movie over-all. This is without a doubt not only the best film adaption of the character but also one of the better fantasy movies to have ever been made in Finland.
