Galax, omul papusa

This sci-fi themed family drama (probably made for television) by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker and animator Ion Popescu-Gopo, made during his later career during the Ceaucescu regime, deals with the now-commonplace theme -- what it means for robots and artificial intelligence to be human. The narrative's thematic maturity, with its reference to the contemporary socio-political situation, gets somewhat underplayed by a rather silly romantic plot targeted towards the family audience. It certainly adds a comedic flavour that does not escape the modern viewer. That being said, a lot of its elements like the wood-sculpted robot design, the occasional choice of lighting, the soundtrack, the character animation lend this film a creepy atmosphere. Because of this, the film often appear idiosyncratic. Nevertheless, to a lot of viewers like myself who are much detached from the time and place it is made in, a film like this carries a curious charm.
