Popcorn with Maple Syrup

Although there are some interesting historic film clips and some interesting facts --- who knew that Belleville Ontario was once Hollywood North? --- this is a rather plodding and unimaginative documentary. It seems to go on forever even though the running time is only 111 minutes. The alphabetical format is a sophomoric gimmick. One also gets the feeling that the producer had just acquired a home video editing suite and was anxious to try out every effect. The incessant crawls look like something out of Home Video For Dummies. Nor do they do more than token coverage of the way tax subsidized Canadian produced movies are set in "American" locations in Canada. It would be interesting to know how many times Vancouver has been a stand in for Seattle as would a few examples of some of the more absurd examples of this quintessentially Canadian practice. It's something Canadian movie buffs should watch but more as a duty than an entertainment. Rather like a fascinating subject taught by a mediocre professor.
