Emil de Varney is a new immigrant from Italy. His friend tries to get him a job -- he doesn't speak English, so no. He gets a menial job, but is injured. When he gets out of the hospital, he decides to go to a class to learn English. With hard work and a good attitude, he eventually gets everything he had hoped for and when confronted with a young immigrant, he tells him to learn English and everything will follow.

Its message seems very old-fashioned in this modern age of multi-culturism, but at its heart is the statement that education is the key to advancement. It's not a panacea, but it's an absolute necessity.... as is getting along with the other people in your community, few of whom, in Pete's day, spoke Italian.
