La Grande Inondation

...It had featured London being devastated by Americans firebombing London to stop an outbreak of a virus that turns victims in to projectile vomiting psychopaths but that idea had already been tried earlier in 28 WEEKS LATER . Still you can't help but be reminded of that movie since there's umpteen overhead shots of a dying London complete with Robert Carlyle as a protagonist . No matter what you thought of 28WL I'm sure you'd agree it is a highly entertaining film despite the flaws . Unfortunately FLOOD fails as both entertainment and environmental warning

The premise alone is utterly unconvincing . There's a big gale over the Atlantic Ocean which causes the flood barriers in London to be overwhelmed leading to a watery grave for hundreds of thousands of people . Hmmm I've no idea why a gale hundreds of miles away off the north west of Britain endangers a city situated in the south east corner of Britain but I do know why all those people died - because they deserved to . They were entirely brainless and deserved all they got . You don't have to think about this plot point because it's rammed down your throat with every wide shot of London . The city has several feet of water running through the streets but no one ever thinks of seeking shelter in those high office buildings that stretch hundreds of feet in to the air . Anyone who didn't think of breaking a window ( That's even if the building was closed at the time ) and running up a few flights of steps deserved everything they got in my opinion

As for the " characters " themselves please read cyphers . I'm surprised they actually had names because if they'd been called self sacrificing hero , powerful woman who doesn't want anyone to see her cry , etc then that would be all you'd need to know about them . David Suchet does manage to project some of his charisma on screen while sadly Robert Carlyle fails to make an impact . He's not helped by having to do a fake London accent ala David Tennant . None of the rest of the cast are able to bring anything to their wafer thin cyphers

In short FLOOD is a major disappointment and the verdict from the votes and comments on this site are universal . It might have worked as a 110 minute straight to DVD movie but with a run time of almost four hours padded out with clichés , poor plotting , sheer internal stupidity and a totally wasted cast this is one disaster miniseries that should have been drowned at birth
