It starts with all the local yokels are thrilled because Hero Fa is back in town. Hero Tu brings him a gift of gold. The daughter is suspicious of his intentions. There is a lot of talking about the martial arts techniques "Cold Wind Hands" and Hero Fa's sword but he remains secretive. Finally, Yi Yuan demands the Dawn Sword and a brawl begins. The hero is killed, betrayed by the senior student.
A character who claims no martial arts ability joins the clan and the movie turns into more of a comedy. This is Lin Kuang-Tseng and this is his very first movie and he has credit as the lead. I have no additional biographical information about him. Comedy is mostly a matter of taste and to my taste I did not find it funny. Other than Yi Yuan I have never heard of any of the other actors and I have watched thousands of these movies.
These old movies were all filmed in widescreen but when they were played on television or converted to VHS rentals the left and right of the picture was cropped. This adversely impacted the quality of the fights. A good fight can appear not so good simply because it was filmed too close. The cropping for video tape also created the effect of being filmed too close. I try to take this into consideration for my critiques of the fights. Pretty much all the fights in tis movie seemed too close.
My copy is a digital file that plays on a HDTV as a square video similar to the old VHS format and it has English subtitles that seem to be added by a fan. I believe it was Jamal.
Overall this is an odd movie for the genre. At this point the only viewer interested in watching it would be a hard core fan of martial arts movies of the golden age from 1967 to 1984. That was my reason and having watched it once to write this review I am sure I will not watch it again.
