Anecdotes
The truck used by the Soviet soldiers in the film has a "GMC" logo in the front. While this may seem to be a mistake for the period, GMC did, in fact, sell trucks to Russia during World War 2.

Gaffes
When the older boy Wiegand walking on the path in Germany, he sees a boy and his father walk by. In one shot, the boy has a hat on, and in the next, the hat is gone.

Sensitive, Universal theme of family

This docudrama was sensitive and universal in theme. All people, everywhere want the freedom to love, instruct, and care for their children in a peaceful environment. It was the story of a German family escaping Russia as WW ll raged but it has broader appeal as we contemplate the plight of all refugees current and former. Lovely photography and beautiful story line.
