  • I think I spider

No pun intended - if you have certain feelings towards spiders ... you may want to skip that. There is not enough distance to make this seem and feel better .. on the other hand: how cute is it? I know ... I am having a hard time writing it even ... but I can't deny what some probably will be feeling here.

There are philosophical questions and answers I reckon ... and the destructive nature of men (I'll attest that mostly to the males, yes) ...

  • His thing actually

No pun intended - considering what is going on in some countries (and states), I understand if this touches home more for some than with others. That said, the movie and the point it tries to make is quite clear from the get go ... feelings cannot be turned off ... turn on is the right way to go anyway.

That said our main character had plans ... and they are squashed through ... well touch. No pun intended again ...

  • Ice cold

Also super hot - no pun intended. This is about sexual awakening ... and the brutality of it I reckon. There is a lot the short movie is telling us - and all through moving pictures. I almost think it is way to direct and brutal in a sense ... don't expect it to be too sensual either.

The main character is well drawn - depending on your own experience(s) you will understand and like this more (or less) .. again no pun intended ... the giallo references are a bonus if you are into them ...

No pun intended - the question there is while watching this: how much of it is real? And what is just a manifestation ... you be the judge ... the woman (main character) is quite burdened to say the least. Her own fault? I would not go as far ... but another decision for you to make.

Very well sho(r)t and well acted with really good special effects to boost ...is it open ended though?

  • Stop! The Thing

Or Fling as it says itself ... no pun intended and no typo either! You can tell this is an hommage to Carpenters movie ... and I mention that one and not the older one, because this takes notes from the 80s movie ... it does so with ease ... talking about the special effects.

There is stop motion, but there is also a lot of inventive humor to it ... so it won't matter much that you can guess where this is going ... it is short and ... well maybe not sweet, more violent ... but in the end maybe a little bit sweet? Depends on your definition ...

  • Bird catching for experts

No pun intended - I know it is called watching, but you will excuse my riff on it. Well I hope you do - the short movie is quite inventive to say the least. Short movies generally speaking are good for bringing something to the viewer that is quick and easy to digest.

In this case we are going into a fantasy world ... you may recognize the mother (actress) and you probably will be able to guess where this is going ... still the message is more than neat and the movie overall is very well done too.

  • Blood is thicker than ...

.... water is the saying ... but what about electricity? Well a robot that is - so no pun intended. We do get a family situation that is quite elevated - you have the smothering mother and her two kids - well they are adults, but they are still kids to her.

And then you have the new member who is there to help the mother ... because the children are busy ... and we get a look into their life and what they are up to. But this is more about the new "member" and how that will ... rumble some feathers and all that ... this is not for the sensitive souls ... a really funny but vicious short!

  • Mayhem taped

No pun intended - the VHS series is going strong ... and this is another entry to that short film legacy ... they mostly have a common theme ... though even then there is deviations from that ... there is a lot of action in this one for one ... so more adrenaline than horror in a sense.

Acting is good, effects are good. Overall more than decent, not sure that is enough for those who crave horror I reckon. Also you have to suspend your disbelief ... when it comes to the VHS format or the ability for common sense ... especially the last one ... doors are there for a reason ... they can't just be opened ... but also have to be closed ... just saying.

  • No child of mine

Generally speaking there is a rule in filmmaking: never work with animals and/or children ... I am happy the director did decide to not listen! So no pun intended - as always one might say.

This is quite life confirming .. while also quite devastating ... we are talking about stuff happening that ... will blow your mind. What is the movie trying to tell you? Well you will define that ... there are quite a few hidden messages in here. The Q&A with the director after the movie was over was quite enlightening ... but I think you can work stuff out for yourself too.

Apart from the phenomenal girl actress (so small, so powerful) ... the cinematography has to be mentioned! New Zealand may be better known with Lord of the Rings ... but I wouldn't blame anyone booking a trip after watching this. Very well done - also no animals were harmed during the making of this ... a lot of digital creations were used ... so many powerful messages ... political, psychological and meaning of life stuff ... well sort of.

  • Doc won't go away

Why should he you may ask, especially when he was called upon? So no pun intended - though some characters seem to not want him there. And let's start with the characters or rather the actors portraying them: great ones to make it short and sweet. I was kind of surprised how many known people were involved in this - and even more that I had not heard of it before watching it the other day.

Gleeson and the others may have done bigger movies than this one, but if you like thriller mysteries ... you could do worse than this one for sure. The acting is ok and the twists are good enough to keep you occupied ... there are other elements here ... which you will discover as time goes by. Maybe I was able to just enjoy it along the way - but I thought this was not too predictable.

  • Try rich, get dying

No pun intended - the saying is a bit tweaked for purposes I needed it to be. This talks or rather has more than one story - so the focus is on multiple people and fates ... as you can tell not all with a happy end.

On the other hand, the question is what is a happy ending? Well for one not a dirty or pun meant here. The acting is nice, the stories are short enough. The predictability is quite high to say the least.

We do come around and ... well round out the very first story and characters. I've seen a better lottery winner drama (thriller, dark comedy) this year ... so this had to compare to that ... and it was not in its favor.

Still this is decent enough - and there is fun to be had ... just suspend your disbelief and go with the flow.

  • Funny how?

Not Joe Pesci, but you may wonder the same thing here: so no pun intended as always. This is quite silly and fourth wall breaking ... and yet also quite adorable. Apparently this played at kids sections at festivals ... you be the judge if that was a right decision ... it is quite tame ... yet has a lot of shockers.

But other elements may have played a role for the distinction ... it is quite tame, even though it has a couple of shockers ... but what really might make you ... well annoyed with it all: the jokes! They are hit and miss to say the least ... and quite silly. I thought they worked fine most of the time ... but even I got annoyed at times ...

  • Theatre play

Or play theater? Well no pun intended either way for sure ... after the clones of Bruce Lee and a documentary about a mostly unknown (at least to the western world) Asian horror queen ... we get a glimpse into a shows that you might want to be part of ... or at least have experienced ... apparently they are getting a renaissance ... at least there seem to be some cities or some people who go around serving people ... and their desires ... and then some.

The documentary is well researched (so many years from concept to the screen) and edited ... not to mention reconstructed ... there is no real footage (film) from back in the day when this was the hot topic ... and only a handful survivors are in this .. or rather "witnesses" ... still it is nice to hear from everyone ... and even have stop motion/claymation round things up ... there is a German saying that states that in the old days everything was better ... I am not sure this documentary is really proving that point .. it does however show a past that was quite interesting to say the least!

  • (Don't) believe the hype

No pun intended - and as you can already see the movie is quite controversial ... or rather the rating and how people feel about it. Comedy and humor is always in the eye of the beholder ... even more so when you have seemingly no ... well check, no floor for how low the movie can stoop ... and this goes way low and way silly to say the least.

Simon Rex - you may remember him from Red Rocket ... if that is your starting point ... if you expect sanity ... well you are already way behind on many things. Not saying what is right or wrong - the movie is really laying it all out. The performances are over the top - and you are either with it or you just give up early on.

There are callbacks, things get explained - but then again, this is so crazy, the question is if any explanation can make this more coherent? Not really ... almost every character in this seems to be mad ... no matter their celebrity status ... I loved what was served ... by everyone involved. But I totally get that the mess is not for everyone ... it is also quite tough to explain ... but that is what made it even more enticing ... there is a conspiracy here ... well you know what I mean ...

  • Get the Toe

As in Ghetto ... well maybe not my best play with words, but as with every other time: no pun intended. We have one of the most notorious rappers Germany has produced .. the streets if you want to call it that. Them and his heritage - his father, the bloodline itself ... and the drugs he not just sold as a teenager, but also consumed.

Not just as a kid that is - depending on how involved you are in the music ... you will already most of the songs or none at all. What most might not know: the person himself ... and the people around him! Be it immediate family or extended one ... that is a lot of voices. And those talking about him - there is praise but there is also the truth about his addictions ... about his darker side.

There is a scene towards the end of the movie ... where we get to see the darkness in Haftbefehl .. he seems to distinguish between him and the artist ... maybe to keep some sort of sanity ... maybe this documentary is here to substitute a psychoanalyst ... but it is one thing for sure: super intriguing ... I had not clue who he was ... how he got where he is today ... and all those things were answered ...

  • Love Eternal

No pun intended - I am not even sure how I would describe the romance story in this one ... nightmare and wet dream put together ... that is also kind of true when it comes to the movie. Does it make sense? I reckon it does, but you have to suspend your disbelief quite a lot.

There is one particular scene that really captures the essence of the insanity (also humor) of the movie ... it is seemingly a serious scene ... it is about planning ahead, about trying to figure out what is coming next ... while laying on a bed ... which alone may seem odd ... but there is another layer added ... when our male main protagonist starts "diving" and swimming ... I know how that sounds ... now imagine how it looks on the screen? Exactly! But it is to be expected - especially with a character who has something built in his hand ... there are things here that I could describe ... but it's best to be seen, to be experienced rather than me or anyone else telling you about them.

This is heavily inspired by Star Wars and other Science Fiction movies - which by the way is kind of funny and happens a lot. Star Wars was inspired by other stuff (some from Japan) ... and it reminds us a bit of the Seven Samurai - Magnificent Seven thing ... Kurosawa was inspired by Western movies, they got inspired by him ... so you can try to go back and find an origin - or say this is a copy or whatever ... or you could just enjoy what is being given to you ... I decide to go with the latter.

  • Stop (motion), drop ...

... open up shop ... oh no, that's how ... artists roll! You may recognize the song I am "butchering" (read using) to make a point here - so no pun intended. This apparently is the first feature movie from Mexico that goes full stop motion ... and if you know anything about how stop motion is being done ... how much work and effort is being put into it ... well you know they really outdone themselves.

The movie starts with an almost still frame - which gave me the impression that maybe the run time (quite long) makes sense, because otherwise how long did they work on this ... but the curtain falls or rather moves to the side ... and we dive into the magical world they have created for us ... and let me tell you: it is fantastic! No pun intended here either ... dive in and enjoy everything.

Things are predictable to a degree - not the colors and the amazing set pieces ... or effects ... but story wise. The really colorful way this is being told is just great ... so much attention to detail ... it is incredible ... story wise you'll be able to guess what is going to happen most of the time.

I did interpret the ending a bit more negatively or in a negative light ... which was not meant that way at all. Maybe you see something like that too ... on the other hand there seems to be a whole world this created ... this is just the beginning ... and what a great introduction we got.

During the end credits we do get to look behind the scenes ... in case you were not aware ... the making of is mind blowing ... quite literally .. watch it as fast as you can ... and on as big a screen as possible ... this is meant to be watched and enjoyed in a grand manner ...

  • Valhalla awaits

With open arms and singing and all that is necessary. So no pun intended - the movie is from Denmark and it is able to mix comedy and violence quite ... well I would argue perfectly. I understand if for some (more sensible and sensitive souls) this feels wrong ... especially considering that the movie does not take any prisoners (though it does literally in one case with one individual and she is treated quite harshly to say the least).

The main character (next to Mads Mikkelsen) is ... quite annoying ... especially his insistence on not giving in and just accepting his brother ... but this also leads to a lot of comedic moments. Again you have to suspend your disbelief and just allow them to make "mistakes".

The movie is inventive enough to be enjoyable ... there may be some lines crossed .. actually not just maybe ... they are crossed! Be aware and don't be offended .. or rather do not watch if you know you can't deal with this being as dark humored as possible ... that makes it different ... and unique (and I would argue good, but that is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?).

Great performances, great twists and dialog ... and just as mad(s) as it can get ...

  • Anora ...

... this isn't. So no pun intended - there are some similarities though ... and I understand if some might feel that way. Now let's be clear: Anora is a way better more coherent and deeper look (especially psychologically speaking) ... this right here is quite the mental journey.

And metaphysical one - especially when it comes to the mind and what our main character thinks she is going through ... cursed and all that. IQ wise there may not be much difference between Anora and the main character here ... which is not meant to be shade. They are not the sharpest tools, but they are not entirely low IQ either ... they just have a way of life and living ... that you may not entirely be able to grasp. And they are not able to comprehend all the things that are about to happen to them.

This may have less nudity than the movie I mentioned, but it does have more depravities for sure ... there is one bathroom scene early on ... well you may not have the stomach for it. There are people who are into that kind of stuff. While there is never penetration (at least for the version I saw at a festival), it is always borderline (frame wise) what is shown. I assume this never crossed the line but it filmed it in a way that made it looked blurred to say the least.

Acting wise this is awesome to say the least. And it is quite unpredictable ... watch this as long as it is still a "secret"/hidden gem ... but only if you are not a sensitive soul ...

  • Always on(line)

No pun intended - nowadays we live multiple lives of sorts ... the real one and the one online. Even more so when you consider what you are able to do (cheat, and the movie does not even have any KI or AI elements to it - it is all done with or from real people/characters).

Add the legends Lau and Chan ... both go head to head. It is incredible how evil especially the former is getting throughout this movie ... and how serious Chan has to play it. There is still humor, but overall this is more on the real side ... which brings us to the fights. There is one in particular, where you could say it is being hold ... down! But the height does not matter ... actually it adds another level, while on the surface (below it) actually taking a lot away - free moving wise. You'll understand once you see it.

Generally speaking there may be some ... slower paced times throughout ... but when the fighting begins ... there is a lot to enjoy! Be it chases too by the way. Now there are things in this that ... well do not seem humanly possible (a jumping off a building without really any real effect to the body or the character to name just one - drop and roll aside)! That said, you should not expect too much reality from this ... just enjoy the show. Even if it may be a bit too long for its own good ... the hinted sequel? Well let's see what happens - the movie itself seems to have been successful enough ... on the other hand Jackie Chan might be doing Rush Hour 4 next (is there a script? Or do they have to write something ... anything?) ... I may have rated it better or higher than most, but that is my MO as I have been told.

  • Happy to (m)eat you

No pun intended - we have another one of those movies that is out there to tell you ... well that the meat industry (or at least parts of it) are not really looking out for the best in us (or the animals they slaughter) ... this is quite obvious yet controversial.

Can we like animals in general, yet eat them? I'll let you decide - there is a carnal urge I reckon ... there are also a lot of studies that suggest that we are more than able to do without meat - actually be healthier ... but for that we have to really change our diet, the way we eat and all that.

Having prefaced with all that ... the message is one thing, but you can watch this without any of this in mind or it hindering you "enjoying" the mayhem that ensues ... no funny business! Again no pun intended here either.

This is not for sensitive souls ... those with a time stomaching things ... try to digest that (pun). And the end? Well you may be able to guess where it leads ... but when the final shot happens ... well you'll be gutted (not literally, but you may understand what I mean once it happens ... for better or worse)

  • Human ...

... we are. No pun intended - I understand that some may not be on board with the concept or not open minded enough to even grasp and be content with the main character (real person) of this documentary. I would just hope that those people just steer clear of this.

It is incredible to me that one would not understand that this individual is not above anyone else ... but also not below. The documentary may focus mostly on one journey ... one life and experience ... but it stands for what many others have to endure. And one would hope that we as society at some point in time become enlighten enough to understand that we are one - we all inhabit and live on this planet together ... let's make it a place where everyone is welcome.

Yes Aliens too - and for some the concept of the sexuality of the main individual here actually may feel ... well Alien. We do not have to understand everything - the documentary tries to fill in some blanks ... you won't agree with everything ... you don't have to. Just try to be accepting and open enough to receive anything this wants to tell you ...

No pun intended - I think that is quite self explanatory ... but if you are down with horror movies in general you may not really care in the first place. Extra scenes during the credits - in case you stick around for that long of course.

Actually that bonus scenes almost elevate this higher than I the previous stuff we have seen ... acting is a mixed bag in this ... but as long as you suspend your disbelief you probably will be able to somehow enjoy this ... well you know what I mean.

Although you have to suspend your disbelief and really go with the flow of the slow burn and the jump scares - which may get annoying and kind of ... well almost boring for some.

Overall very nicely shot - the acting is ok, it is just the story or twists that you have to be on board with - they do not blossom alone ... you have to cater (and water?) them ... sorry not sorry and another pun I reckon.

No pun intended - the movie is way more honest about what it and its character is/are. I have not read the fifty shades book(s) yet, but I think I am still able to say that - it feels like it for sure.

Acting and story are decent - if you are here ... for the naughty stuff, let me be clear: there are other places where you'll ... well "leave" with more satisfaction ... that said, you should be fine. You know what this, is or at least what it wants to tell you ... it just shows us how good and gripping the movie is.

Be a good boy/girl and watch this ... or not to be Frank ... if you are not into it! Otherwise this might get to ... captivating ... had to do a few more of these .. just for fun.
