An intense, expressive leading actress, Runkehl was noted for her portrayals of uncomplicated working girls, who, in due course, mature into worldly and emancipated women. She had entered Defa's acting school as a seventeen-year old in 1948 and developed through the 1950's into one of East Germany's most popular and critically acclaimed actresses, eventually held up as a socialist role model.
