Classically-trained Austrian character actress and singer, on stage from 1895. Ensemble member of the Hoftheater Dresden (1899-1908) and the Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg (1914-1921). Renowned as a tragedienne in the theatre, she also made regular film appearances from 1920, initially in period dramas as royalty, aristocrats or upper class socialites, latterly in smaller maternal roles. Ran her own private acting academy after the war.
