In the 1960s, he was the top editor at Sport, a monthly magazine. In 1972, he became editorial director at the Book-of-the-Month Club, and eventually became the company's president, chairman, and chief executive. Later he joined the Viking Penguin publishing house as an editor, and became publisher and editor-in-chief before retiring in 1998.
