Steely-eyed, balding, bespectacled British character actor, best known as 'the supervisor', perpetually announcing 'orange alerts' in eight instalments of
The Prisoner (1967). Swanwick started out as a stagehand at the Nottingham Playhouse after World War II, then acted for two years in repertory with the Argosy Players in Mansfield. In 1950, he moved to London and obtained several small parts in films, often as Germans. In much of his later life was he was dogged by health problems.
