She had previously been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 1993. Despite her long struggle with the illness, she graduated from college and received a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010 with a thesis titled 'The Effect of Integrated Arts Therapy on the Post-Traumatic Self-Identity, Self-Esteem, and Self-Control of North Korean Defectors'.
