Close associate of former Soviet premier
Mikhail Gorbachev, with whom he worked to modernize Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. He was with Gorbachev in 1991 when hardline Communist officials mounted a short-lived coup against him and took them prisoner. Both men were in danger of being executed before the coup was finally put down.
