I was not familiar with Anjelah Johnson until a few days ago when I accidentally discovered her on YouTube. What struck me about her was that, unlike most other, rather stereotypical, female comedians who tend to be extremely foulmouthed and graphic with dirty jokes, she was funny while being squeaky clean. Unfortunately, YouTube does not present the entire picture. It shows only the "best of" of any comedian.
Moreover, Netflix, probably in order to entice potential new subscribers, posts bits and piece of its comedy specials on YouTube and sometimes spoils the entire show by posting the best bits. That's what they did in this case.
I had already seen the funniest parts of this special on YouTube. The rest was amusing but not funny. She seemed to be thinking a lot by repeating filler lines which makes her look amateur. Also, her whiny teenage voice, which she blurts out more frequently than I'd like care for to get quick laughs, is less funny and more cringy.
In short, Anjelah Johnson has a lot of potential, however, she needs to polish her material and style. She is a little heavy on stylings of youth pop culture which seems to make her look like a "wanna be" teenager.
