I am fairly new to ballet. I have only seen a small handful but I am really enjoying them. I watched this as I am working my way through all the screen versions of Shakespeare plays. There are so few versions of The Winters Tale available to watch. And I found this modern ballet free to view on MarqueeTV and hoped it would help complete my study of this unusual but wonderful play.
I have to say that overall this was the best ballet that have seen and a fantastic adaptation of the play. All of the emotional intensity included in the play was conveyed so well: jealousy, tragedy, loss, redemption. The last scene in particular of Hermione and Leontes' reunion was absolutely stunning and affected me deeply and confirmed my interest in and understanding of ballet as an art form and means of communicating stories and emotions. As well as the wonderful steps and expert performing of them, I think it was the dramatic and moving score which really made this so effective. And then on top of this, because it is a modern and professional production, the camerawork makes it really watchable and highlights all the things that we need to see happening on stage.
