I sat down to watch the 1988 Hong Kong drama thriller "Fa nei qing" (aka "The Truth") for the first time here in 2022. Oddly enough, then I had actually never heard about this movie from writers Johnny Mak and Stephen Shiu before now as I had the opportunity to watch it.
Needless to say that I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch "Fa nei qing" on the account of it being a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't already seen, but also because the movie starred Andy Lau.
And I will say that writers Johnny Mak and Stephen Shiu did manage to put together an interesting enough storyline here. However, and yes there is a however here, the pacing of the narrative was just somewhat monotonous and slow paced, which was holding the movie back. A shame really, because "Fa nei qing" definitely had a lot to offer.
Aside from Andy Lau, then the 1988 movie "Fa nei qing" had the likes of Deannie Ip on the cast list too, and she really delivered a great performance, carrying the majority of the movie with her stellar performance. And the movie also had familiar faces such as Fui-On Shing and Paul Chun on the cast list.
"Fa nei qing" was good enough for a single viewing, however, the movie was just somewhat tough to get through, given the rather slow and monotonous pacing of the narrative. So I doubt that I will ever be returning to watch "Fa nei qing" a second time. An adequate movie, but not among the best of Andy Lau's movies.
My rating of "Fa nei qing" lands on a five out of ten stars.
