Soundies were short films, three minutes in length or a bit less. They were meant to be played on a device called a Mills Panaram; put a dime in, and you got one soundie from a reel of ten. From 1940 through 1946, you could find them in bars, night clubs, and other venues. Usually they were changed weekly. Although the vast majority were musical shorts, like this one, there were also comedy and variety soundies.
Is that really Joe Turner singing? His voice sounds higher than I expected.
