A mindblowing, surprising music video that goes as an even more spectacular and genial marketing idea to promote "The Idea of You", film starring
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. I can't recall anything similar in recent years that was actually effective and interesting to watch, selling both
the film and the soundtrack and bringing attention to everything related with the media and its story. This is a music video of the fake boy band August
Moon and one of their hit songs, "Guard Down". The clip appears quite in the background in the movie, it serves its purpose in a fine manner but seeing
the actual thing was pretty good and I was not expecting to like this much.
Usually filmmakers, whenever there's inclusion of music and songwriting on films, make things a little over-the-top, or intentionally badly made (as
The Rock's video in "Be Cool") or without quality enough to appeal to audiences. Even though "Guard Down" is intended to mimick pop/rock boy bands and
using all the cliches related with cuh, but it's never with the intent of mocking them, hence why we have an uplifting result that works, and even the
song was fun and cool to hear it.
As said, it revolves on cliches and here it was used a high school setting filled with disruptive students being uncooperative in the class, except
for teacher's pet, the nerd-looking student played by Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), who ends up teaching his classmates since the actual teacher can't do much
with his students. Lots of dance and lip-synching, colorful movements all around inside the class, just selling the dream and fun popstars have and
audiences love to see. It pays a great tribute to The Police and "Don't Stand So Close to Me" video and its settings (even the intro chords resembles
the rock group) but it's mostly the usual ideas used on pop videos. Oh, August Moon actually sounds great too!
Highly enjoyable in everything it does, and the song is catchy in a nice way. So, fans or the film, music enthusiasts or not, just sit back and enjoy this little show. You'll be surprised with everything about it. 9/10.
