Butler has his own country-western rock band in which he performs all his original songs. The band, called "The Gene Butler Band" has perormed all over the LA area and has recorded an album, with a second one in the works.
He was nominated for a 1977 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role for his performance in "P.S. Your Cat is Dead" at the Pheasant Run Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
