The Greasy Strangler

One of the most delightfully bizarre films I've seen! The plot revolves around father and son Big Ronnie (Michael St Michaels) and Big Brayden (Sky Elobar) who have an argumentative relationship and work together conducting a disco walking tour of their town. One day, an alluring woman named Janet (Elizabeth De Razzo) attends a tour and Ronnie and Brayden start competing for her affections. All the while, a strange slimy being named 'The Greasy Strangler' stalks the streets and preys on unsuspecting victims. Even from the opening studio logos; one of which displays a man's intestines exploding out of his rear end to spell 'Timpson Films', you can tell this is going to feature some gross out gore and bodily functions. And oo boy does it! Director Jim Hoskings (An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn), who has referenced 70's sitcom The Young Ones and the works of David Lynch as influences, makes his feature length debut here and it's certainly not going to be for everyone. I can even understand why people may hate it to a certain extent. I thought it was laugh out loud funny and, although indulgently explores the dirtiest side of humanity, never feels unnecessary or forced. The sexual and horror aspects are all played for laughs and the most tense part is perhaps the ending which leaves you with a huge sense of 'what the.... ?!' afterwards. It knows how to use repetition in its sense of humour and the perfect example is in the repeating car wash scenes after each of the Strangler's murders; it always made me cheekily grin and gets more ridiculous further into the film. Overall, its going to frustrate and delight viewers in equal measure but I think it's worth a watch and should not be taken seriously!
