I want to begin this review with telling you that I actually worked on this movie. I performed B roll duty, and some additional camera. I also (embarrassingly) performed most of the sound track. I did some additional work as well, but I will get to that later.
Anyone that has seen this movie will know it is a contender with "worst ever" titles. And if you haven't, you really should. It's absolutely hilarious in its awfulness.
The plot might have worked in the hands of more capable talents, however this is what happens in the films 70 minute duration. Several chuckleheaded hunters (played by several friends of mine) wind up shooting a little girl. When daddy comes along looking for his daughter (played by one of the films two directors) they wind up shooting him too. Anyway, they bury him and his daughter. But the catch is Daddy isn't dead and comes back as The Ungulate! Part man part deer... I think? In the movie it is just a really lousy looking mask and jacket. Back to the plot. The hunters get hired to poach by an unsavory investor and of course get hunted by The Ungulate instead.
Oh boy... This movie. I knew it was going to turn out pretty rough, but I honestly had no idea how bad it would actually turn out.
So this movie has crew members from another production, Bottom Creek. Bottom Creek had basically been completed when this movie began production. Initially filming took place at a wooded residential location. As well as using the writers home for scenes featuring the ungulates home. About 30 percent of the film is filmed at these locations. The rest of the film is filmed on my farm in Northern Virginia. We all thought it would be a perfect location for a horror movie. And it probably still is, but not this particular horror movie.
All was good and intended with this movie. We weren't out to make a masterpiece. I came on as an additional camera man because I wanted the experience, and it's fun making a horror movie. But I also came in with the mindset that we could make a really good horror flick with no money if some things were done right. I will say this, nothing behind the scene were done right. There were several different cameras used, which made editing a nightmare. I was given the film in a work print with some color corrections here and there. But it was patchy and impossible to match anything correctly. As result, some of the scenes look like Barney the dinosaur splashed a bundle of purple paint everywhere. So yeah, I will take credit for that.
And the soundtrack! Let's just say that I had no inspiration to write anything for this movie. But I really wanted the opportunity to write a soundtrack to a movie. It turned out just ridiculous in tone. Which actually does make it hilarious in a way.
The SFX were done by my old friends The Amos Bros. There effects work is actually better than what is on display in this movie. A lot of it was simply poorly edited by one of the films two directors...
I honestly have no excuse for my part in this mess. I wanted a much better film. I am sure we all did. But this was so bad in every way. I feel as if nothing was done right at all, and it really shows on the screen. The most I can hope is that one day the movie will be fondly looked upon by bad movie lovers everywhere. That is doubtful, it is a rough go.
