A highly interesting adaption of the sophisticated gothic novel by ETA Hoffmann. Colourful details of early 19th-century city atmosphere, exact matches with the original text, impressive images and graphic horror. The actors and especially Christoph Waltz serve well the gothic atmosphere of this excellent TV-Movie. Not a major aspect though, a well-wrought score (there is no music) might have intensified the horror. A definite recommendation for any gothic fan.
