Le matou

I am getting to be a huge fan of Quebec cinema yet it is disappointing to see how few people respond to it here on IMDb. This is a fine film that is not done in the Hollywood school. Quebec indeed has a distinct culture and fine work like this is part of it. This film would not have worked had it been set in Toronto where it undoubtedly would have ended up as ersatz Hollywood. I saw it (on Bravo) with dubbed English sound. The lip synch was poor. Subtitles might have been better. But nevertheless, this is a well produced, well photographed, engaging story with humour, tragedy, love and betrayal. (As well as a big and handsome alley cat, although it has little to do with the plot.) A couple of the characters are a bit overblown and there are one or two murky plot twists. But, on the whole, it is a simple tale well told that also offers a interesting glimpse of Montreal life.
