Sada: Gesaku · Abe Sada no shôgai

This story comes from the same incident depicted in "In the Realm of the Senses". The latter is more erotic and goes into more detail on Sada's relationship with her lover. However this film shows us more of what caused Sada to go mad and doesn't even show the penis-slicing event.

This is a quirky film, but has a VERY unique style -- mixes black & white and color stock in an interesting way, and mixes elements of humor and drama in a way that makes it somewhat hard to follow at times.

It is definitely worth seeing at least once -- especially if you have seen "In the Realm of the Senses" and want to get a different point of view on this story.

My only regret is that I can't find a place to rent it or see it again!
