- ConnessioniVersion of Die Fledermaus (1923)
Recensione in evidenza
Die Fledermaus has always been one of my favourite operettas, being funny with sparkling music. This is an enjoyable production, not my personal favourite like the 1984 Royal Opera House one, but well performed and interesting. Some people, me included initially, will find the English language quite a shock and some of the jokes don't quite work as well as they should in a modern setting. However, the updating to 1930s New York does look gorgeous and the dialogue is very funny. The music is energetically performed by the orchestra and assuredly conducted. The chorus are well balanced and lively on stage. The performances are great, most notably Anthony Warlow, whose Eisenstein shows charm and a very natural sense of comic timing as well as a beautiful baritone voice. Also giving strong performances are Suzanne Johnston as an eccentric and dashing Prince Orlofksy and Amelia Farrugia as a pert Adele. Gillian Sullivan is charming as Rosalinde, Anson Austin is amusing(if not quite hilarious) as Alfred and Geoff Kelso is a characterful Frosch.
In conclusion, a very good if not outstanding production. 8/10 Bethany Cox
