When I first saw this DOCTOR WHO documentary I was very much taken by it and endlessly watched it on video for months after its broadcast . The basic premise of this nostalgia piece is to have an " anorak " talking over a series of clips with headings like " Death By Special Effects " and " Behind The Sofa " However I've not seen RESISTANCE IS USELESS for many years and have no desire to either . What happened was I eventually got to see nearly all the remaining DOCTOR WHO stories via satellite TV meaning that the documentary became rapidly antiquated due to its format . If you've got most of the show on videotape there's no real reason to watch something comprised entirely of clips . And I can't help thinking that many of the clips are wrongly chosen in the first place just like in the video release of THE TOM BAKER YEARS . For example we have a section called " Give It All You've Got " featuring OTT acting scenes but is missing Dr Lawrence's death from The Silurians without doubt one of the most glorious , loudest performance's ever seen on British television never mind on DOCTOR WHO . Not only that after RESISTANCE IS USELESS the BBC treated the fans to a run of repeats from each Doctor : The Time Meddler , The Mind Robber , The Sea Devils , The Deamons , Genesis Of The Daleks , The Caves Of Androzani , Revelation Of The Daleks and Battlefield , the problem being that many of the clips in RESISTANCE IS USELESS that featured the second Doctor were from The Mind Robber , many of the clips of the third Doctor were from The Sea Devils etc which does make the fans feel slightly cheated about something
Not to appear totally nit-picky and anorakish I just want to repeat I did enjoy RESISTANCE IS USELESS at the time , it's better than the 1977 LIVELY ARTS documentary on the show which very often consisted of talking head interviews and academic discussion , but it's not nearly as good as 30 YEARS IN THE TARDIS which features things as diversive as adverts, never before seen archive material and reconstructions of classic scenes
