Chhal

Chhal is a writer's dream come true. For the simple reason that it has been directed just as it was intended to, with passion and loyalty to the script. Mehta showed signs of technical brilliance and most importantly originality of thought and treatment with Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar. He showed signs of bubbling energy and intelligence with his first venture. The one thing that DPMLY lacked was a cohesive script and proper incorporation of the tracks. Chhal goes all the way in that regards. Suparn Verma has written the film superbly and Mehta has translated the energy of Verma's words onto the screen as if the two are in telepathy with each other. The acting by relative unknowns such as Kay Kay (as far as acting is concerned he is a newcomer), Prashant Narayanan and Jaya Seal is simply remarkable to say the least. The hrithiks, deols, rais and kareenas need to learn something about the tradeoff between ego gratification versus character portrayal. Viju Shah just adds a great dimension with his tracks as well as the background score. Alongwith Parinda, Satya and Company, I would rate this as the best film in the genre of gangster films. A most definite 10/10.
