Freedom Riders is a story of a small, core group of riders who evolved from covertly building rough and unsustainable trails, to creating a precedent setting relationship with the Forest Service and building some of the best Freeride trails in the country. Welcome to Freedom Riders a look at the evolution of the sport and the progression of trail building in this country. From its days as an activity reserved for the few who rebelled against the spandex clad status quo, to the multimillion dollar, mainstream sport that it is today, see the true inside story on a group of riders that would never see their passion die.

      In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It is the first film from the 2010's to be preserved in the Registry.
    • Blooper
      Some footage used about 40 minutes into the movie show Alabama State Trooper/Highway Patrol cars that clearly post-date the Spring/Summer 1961 Freedom Riders movement. One of the cars is a 1962 Plymouth and the other is a 1963 Chevrolet. The scene is used in context of the Freedom Riders arriving in Montgomery but apparently came from a later, unrelated incident.

    Embarrassed by what I didn't know

    I've seen many documentaries and movies, and read many books about the Civil Rights movement; I'd never seen anything focused specifically on the Freedom Riders and the Freedom Rides. They'd always been mentioned in other works, prominently, but still auxiliarily. "Freedom Riders" is a historically important and necessary documentary. The Freedom Riders should be hailed as heroes of the Civil Rights movement and I was overjoyed to see their faces and hear their words. This documentary was very revelational. I'm always learning and as much as I know I'm always embarrassed by what I didn't know. "Freedom Riders" served up a hefty helping of embarrassment that I was more than happy to eat.
