Popularly known by the name of the main character, "Mashadi Ibad" was based on a musical comedy by composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov and written in the early 1900s. The story is based on the age old-theme of a beautiful young woman (Gulnaz) who falls in love with a young man (Sarvar) but is obliged to marry someone else. Gulnaz' father, Rustam bey, is bankrupt. He decides that the only way to pay off his creditors is to get money by marrying off Gulnaz to the rich, old, widowed bazaar merchant, Mashadi Ibad. But Sarvar contrives a way to foil the plan by disguising himself as the bride hidden under the thick Muslim veil. When Mashadi Ibad lifts the veil to see his bride's face, he discovers Sarvar who holds him at gun point and makes him write a statement that he really wants to marry the maid, not Gulnaz. This is where the work gets its title, "If Not This One, Then That One." The strategy works and Sarvar succeeds in marrying Gulnaz.

Set in turn of the century Baku at the dawn of the 20th century, a young man wishes to marry. Since he is a rich and successful business man, despite his young age, he feels that he should have his pick of any bride that he fancies, however, Azerbanjani tradition dictates otherwise. He then decides to get stealthy about the matter and disguises himself as a mere cloth peddler. As the peddler, a young woman falls in love with him, but grieves that he father will not marry her to a mere peddler. Young Askar then reveals who his he to her father and asks for he hand in marriage. Seeing that he is indeed a wealthy young man, the father hardly agrees and the two are permitted to marry.

This films consists of two subject lines. In the first , a man(Ali) prepares to organize a birthday party for his little son. So during the birthday (daytime) he works hard to buy as many products as possible in order to make the birthday party amazing (in the evening). As he gets tired he fell asleep during the party which is the culmination point of the movie. In the second a man (Mustafa) comes to captital city(Baku) from the rural with his friend for business purposes and is quite naive. He meets a woman there by accident and he likes her so he asks her for her help in order to get acquainted with the city and the woman accepts. She shows the city to him and in the evening as it was raining , she brings Mustafa to her house but she gets afraid of her brother to come to her house and see Mustafa with him so she makes Mustafa leave the house in the night. As Mustafa doesnt know the city well he goes astray and accidentally meets Ali who was standing in the balcony of his house.

The investigator Seifi Ganiev runs the case of an illegal mercery shop's head Murad Abiyev, who confessed in embezzlement of one million rubles from public funds.Abiyev is also accused of the murder of an underage girls that occurred in Riga shortly after Abiyev saw her. He denies his guilt, but does not name the perpetrators though he knows them, despite the fact that he is facing the death penalty. The investigator understands that some high-ranking officials stand behind Abiyev, but he has no proof.Ganiev seeks to obtain from the prisoner the whole truth to bring the criminals to justice.
