The hero is a retired army officer in the period of transition in Romania from the Communist rule to democracy. As many aged people during these times he loses a lot in position and material situation and is too aged to adapt and start building something from zero. His last resort is the family, but his home and family is also slowly decomposing under the pressure of the times. His elder son dies in a stupid home accident (the film starts with his funeral), than his only other child, a daughter moves to America in the search of a better material life. His life seems to fall under the control of his in-law, a mercantile and much better adapted man, who slowly seems to deprive him not only of his children, but also of his pride and human dignity. The end is unexpected, but if you look back and reflect on what you've seen on screen, it becomes logical.

Alex, in his mid-thirties, is a quite neurotic character. When his mother is hospitalized with a stroke, the caring son's life gets out of track. At the hospital he finds himself in a burlesque kind of human zoo full of unexpected characters and surprising events. Trying to manage the situation in between everybody's advice, he's coming hypochondriac. While his mother seems to feel perfectly fine Alex is making his own set of mistakes - throughout with best intentions.

The story takes place in 2010, in a post-communist Romania, in which some of those who fully lived in the communist period don't seem to fit anymore. The main character and her husband are about to receive a visit from their daughter, who has been living in the States for the last 10 years, and her American boyfriend. While having dinner with her reunited family, she realizes that she actually liked it in the communist era, that she was better off, and that most of the characteristics of a true communist do gather in her. During the whole movie, she has flashbacks from that "golden" period, and somehow tries to recapture what her life once was, while trying to figure out and solve her daughters' money problems. It is a funny movie, especially for those who know something about communism and what happened then in Eastern Europe, though based on weird yet very real situations people were faced with back than (until 1989).
