Conflict photo-video journalists and their wars

by craigburma • Created 11 years ago • Modified 9 months ago
Since Alexander Gardner's American Civil War photos depicting dead of Antietam, conflict photojournalism has connected us to conflict in ways no amount of words could ever accomplish.

These print, online and broadcast media journalists "cut through political abstractions and make connections on a human level" (quoting James Nachtwey). At great risk to themselves, they bear witness to the most difficult human truths. All while hoping to avoid their names being added to those eulogized at St. Bride's Church.

These titles tell their stories in various forms of conflict; mostly armed but some also conflict against the powerful and political elite.

Journalism in times of war has become an increasingly lethal and traumatic endeavor for the men and women who face constant threats to their lives and psyches. With the death toll skyrocketing from only two reporters killed in World War I to almost a journalist a week being killed in the last two decades, UNDER FIRE weaves together portraits, battlefield accounts and combat footage to reveal what the reporters see, think and feel. Martyn Burke, documentary filmmaker whose work has brought him to battlefields around the world, and Anthony Feinstein, the psychiatrist who works with journalists to heal the trauma, delve into the experiences of top tier correspondents from AP, New York Times, BBC, and LA Times, among others, bringing a unique understanding and insight into the psychological cost of covering war.

Camp Victory, Afghanistan is the true story of the American Exit Strategy. Using 300 hours of footage shot over the course of three years, the film follows a battle-tested Afghan General and the steady stream of U.S. National Guard soldiers deployed to train the men of his newly formed battalion. It is the first film to examine the reality of building a functioning Afghan military-- but it is also a story about friendship and the unlikely bonds that form across cultural, political and social barriers.
