In Sao Paulo, the betrayed wife of Americo Baldini, a powerful and corrupt Senator, turns him in, and his fraud schemes and lies are exposed. After his girlfriend's consequent suicide, Baldini has his illegitimate son, a 17 year old, kidnapped and taken to a decadent seaside resort in the country's extreme southern coast. To protect the operation, the Senator chooses a former mistress in her late 50s, the now-nurse Serena (Betty Faria), to take care of the kidnapped illegitimate son during his secret captivity. Isolated in this forgotten beach at the end of the world, kidnapped son and his father's older mistress become involved beyond that of a mother son relationship.

Aurélia, a young black woman who works at a factory and lives in a working-class neighborhood in São Paulo, is seeing Fábio Tavares, who gets involved with a racist neo-nazi group.

Luiz, a sociologist, had his political rights suppressed, during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Also, his wife Ruth had been tortured and killed. So he decides to hide in his niece Natércia and her husband Felipe's country house for a while. Natércia invites the intellectual Marcela and her boyfriend broker Ricardo for a weekend together. Luiz's world is upset and the existential problems of all get entangled, with unexpected results.

Unemployed professor, Fernando is sustained by his factory worker girlfriend Rita. One day they go out to an afternoon picnic with a couple of friends, sexist and reactionary Luís Carlos and inexperienced Lilita.

Sandra is a rich widow who wants to know the beach house her late husband has left her. She goes there with her lover Odilon, an unscrupulous young man whose studies she's supporting. Helping her with the red tape is dr. Carvalho, a very conservative and old-fashioned lawyer. In her way to the house, she meets a couple of hippies, looking for a place to stay. She hires them as temporary housekeepers. Living nearby is a crazy prophet, who shows his genitals to anybody who comes close. During their stay in the house, all these characters clash, in unusual and funny ways, including some disgusting tourists, three young women on vacation, the police, prostitutes, a reporter for a communist magazine, and many others.

Maria, a countrywoman, leaves for São Paulo, where she becomes an industrialist's lover and meets all kind of people but, dissatisfied, she returns to the country to meet her family again.
