My Favourite Gay movies
Ok, so the majority of gay movies revolve around a love story. Otherwise it wouldn't really be a "gay" movie, which is aimed, in the majority at a gay audience, it would just be a movie with gay characters. So having viewed a large number in my lifetime I decided to share with you my favourites. As with all movies there are still some I have minor criticisms over but then, don't we all? My reason(s) for liking each one is unique to me, and of course you are welcome to share your own opinions/feelings on my choices. This list is open to being updated/amended as new movies come to my attention. Hope you enjoy.

- DirectorBavo DefurneStarsBen Van den HeuvelEva Van der GuchtThomas CoumansA teenage boy's search for love finds him fixated on a boy who lives nearby.More love story than coming out story set in 1970's Belgium. It revolves around the life of the young, reserved Pim, his life dealing with his absent mother, and his friendship and desires for his best friend Gino mainly over a period of 2 or 3 years. As time passes and Gino becomes more distant due to other distractions, Pim is pushed to one side until one day, the return of the mysterious Zoltan, coupled with a family tragedy, encourages Pim to forget his past and follow his true feelings. Beautifully shot debut movie from director Bavo Defurne coupled with a dreamy soundtrack from Little Auk and beautifully and comfortably acted by the young leads, this is certainly not to be missed.

On top of this, Sieger is struggling to deal with his own feelings and his general awkwardness around girls. These feelings are brought to a head when Sieger meets Mark and over the course of training for an upcoming athletics competition, they fall in love.
Sieger however is not ready to deal with the consequences of publicly admitting his feelings for Mark, who is some ways seems to have everything Sieger would like to have, in a happy home life with a loving, supportive family who are fully accepting of his sexuality.
A number of events leave Sieger with a decision to make. - DirectorChristian FaureStarsCyrille ThouveninStéphan Guérin-TilliéÉva DarlanAfter his gay cousin dies from hepatitis, young Laurent, who lives with his best friend Carole, falls in love with Cedric, a plant scientist. He's afraid to inform his conservative parents that he is gay.Something that this film has is real depth. The characters have stories, backgrounds, reasons for doing what they do. All these things allow the film to connect with the audience as many viewers will find comparisons to things that have perhaps happened in their own lives.
To his parents, Laurent is in love with Carole and the two of them live together in their student apartment in Paris. However in reality, this is all a front to disguise the fact that Laurent is in fact gay and his life has been turned upside down following the death of his gay cousin Mark, who was abandoned by the family after he came out to them.
Fearing the same rejection, Laurent feels trapped and unsure how to deal with his search to find love, and subsequently risk losing his parents if they find out.
Sent on a work placement by his college, Laurent meets Cedric and an attraction develops. Cedric however is not prepared to hide their love away and Laurent is now forced into dealing with his personal demons or risk losing the person he loves.

- DirectorCraig BorehamStarsMiles SzantoXavier SamuelTess HaubrichThings are changing for Mik. His world has been turned upside down by the sudden death of his older brother forcing him to redefine his place in his family. The one solid thing in Mik's life is his best friend Dan. But Dan has a new girlfriend...Teenager Mik feels somewhat isolated, having recently lost his brother to an accidental drug overdose. This in turn led to Mik being unable to communicate with his parents due to their inability to deal with the loss.
Now Mik also fears losing his best friend Dan, who has recently started dating, and is somewhat under the spell of, the seductive Phaedra.
Invited to a party a Phaedra's house, Dan takes Mik along for moral support. Things however do not go as any of them hoped, as Mik, who is protective of his best friend is anything but welcoming towards Dan's new love interest. The reason for this protectiveness is never fully clarified. Mik's actions suggest that there may be more to his feelings for Dan than just a close friendship, however its really up to the viewer to decide.
Excellent performances in what is an excellent, thought provoking story. - DirectorGrant SciclunaStarsReef IrelandLuke MullinsFrank SweetWhen juvenile inmate Malcolm is offered a chance at parole, he is torn between his chance for freedom and protecting the one he loves. An unusual location for a love story, this short film focuses on Malcolm, an inmate in an Australian young offenders institute. To their fellow inmates, Malcolm and his cellmate Tye don't get along and Malcolm must almost turn a blind eye to the bullying and abuse that Tye is forced to endure from some of the other inmates, but once alone in their cell, we discover that there is much more to their relationship. The harsh realities of prison life are offset beautifully against the warm, tender moments shared behind locked doors and as Malcolm is presented with a chance to start earning his freedom, he must decide whether to chase his dream, or make a sacrifice to protect the one he loves.
- DirectorJohn KeitelStarsDaniel ChilsonNiklaus LangeDon HandfieldGriff wants to maintain just a superficial relationship with his all-gay boyfriend, who gets seriously wounded in a gay bashing.Don't let the obvious low budget and sometimes ropey acting put you off what is an excellent "coming out" movie, which deals with two key issues that every gay person must at some point in their life have to deal with "When is the right time?" and "Acceptance".
For Griff who, enjoys the comfort and safety of being a popular member of his college fraternity, these issues are forced upon him when his secret boyfriend Pete is the victim of a gay bashing incident in a known gay area of town. The problem for Griff is that he has information that could be important to the police investigating the crime. He must now face up to the issue of whether to admit his feelings for Pete or to hide among the safety of the macho, but somewhat homophobic fraternity while Pete's attackers potentially go free.
This film works so well because it tackles a subject that was, at the time, somewhat Taboo and being a gay kid in a college fraternity was far from the norm. Despite this, this is still an exceptional film that stands up well against more modern offerings. - DirectorAlex SichelStarsAlison FollandTara SubkoffCole HauserClaude and Ellen are best friends who live in a not-so-nice area of New York. - DirectorLloyd Eyre-MorganStarsJulie HesmondhalghTommy KnightCeallach Spellman"Closets" is an unusual film with a sci-fi twist. It features Henry, a tormented 16-year-old boy who, on 12 March 1986, time-travels through his bedroom closet and meets a similar present-day teenager, Ben, occupying his same bedroom 30 years later. Ben and Henry's developing friendship highlights past and present-day issues facing young gay teenagers. While our society's attitudes towards LGBTs has improved dramatically over the past three decades, Ben and Henry's story shows that confusion about sexual identity and homophobic bullying, can still result in self-harming and suicidal intentions. These two teenagers from different time zones develop a deep friendship offering each support and optimism for the future. This is an unusual, compassionate, ultimately uplifting story, peppered with sorrow, humour, and hope.
