Swing list; The Jazzcadence or movies including swing moves

by Sifragum • Created 11 years ago • Modified 5 years ago
A Swing list: The Jazzcadence or movies including swing dance .... ( may also include tap or ballroom moves. )

Swing dance present in scenes or taking the lead in movies. ( may include also some tap dances or ball dance (not to confuse). Swing appeared with jazz rhythms in the 20 with a more Charleston style. Though it has been popularized in cinema in the 30 and 40 mostly with the lindy hop form. It’s was great entertainment to make a profit. As a piece of personal information: I didn’t watch all the movies yet – it’s a project I’m kind of working on. If you have suggestions or corrections the comments section is here!

A boogie-woogie piano introduces what purports to be a jitterbug lesson, starring prize winner Arthur Walsh, his partner Jean Phelps-Veloz, and then later various other couples. We start with steps imported from other dances, like the waltz, then sped up. Next Walsh and Jean show some basic steps, but the movements are too swift for the narrator to describe them or the viewer to learn how to do them. By the end, various couples (all but a pair of briefly-seen children are white), including some comic ones, give a high-speed demonstration as the music rocks and swings. These are hep cats. Pete Smith's narration is full of slang.

With the size of her classes dwindling each year, Newton High music teacher Malvina Adams is asked to retire. Trying to prove she's still got it, she composes a school fight song which finds its way into the hands of bandleader Bob Crosby who turns it into an overnight hit. Over the protestations of her stuffy niece Abby, Malvina travels to New York and performs her song with Bob's band and becomes even more popular. The newness of the song fades quickly though, and, faced with becoming a flash-in-the-pan, Malvina tries to write one last hit song before giving up and returning to Newton.

This two-hour documentary traces the history of swing, from its first emergence in the 1920s to its current revival across the United States, Canada and Europe. "This Joint Is Jumpin'" takes you back to a time when zoot suit-clad hepcats hit the dance floor with dolls in full-skirted dresses and seamed stockings. All troubles were forgotten to the hip sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. You'll also hear how the original swing bands influenced current groups like the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Big Bad VooDoo Daddy. So put on your dancing shoes and hit the floor because..."This Joint Is Jumpin'"!
