My Top 15 Favourite movies of 2016
As 2016 is coming, to a close I've decided to look back at the year to note out great titles I enjoyed and admired. All the luck for 2017, looking forward to Blade Runner 2049.
Any film before 10 are films that I liked, as well as being films that would've made the list if I didn't see these films.

- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerLinguist Louise Banks leads a team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. When I first watched this movie, I thought it was good at best. It wasn't amazing and I felt like it was overrated, however the one thing I knew the most was that I wanted to watch it a second time, so I did and I knew I saw the best movie of 2016, if not one of my personal favourites. And seeing how Denis Vileneuve is directing a sequel to my all time favourite movie, I have high hopes for him. 8.5/10 Unfortunately because the film is now available to everyone that means more people have seen the film, more people who don't understand the film, however the issue is this type of audience is now a majority and are now using 'Arrival' as a term for a *beep* sci-fi film. And because of this Arrival's imdb rating has went from an 8.5 to an 8/10. So I will give this film a 9/10 on imdb.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsPaul DanoDaniel RadcliffeMary Elizabeth WinsteadA hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.I only heard about this film after the year was finished, and sure I saw this a year later when the film came out on DVD, but I'm absolutely gutted I never saw this film in cinemas. Still the film is amazing without a cinema, I'm usually one who trusts the imdb rating so going in I thought this film would be majorly disappointing as is any film with a 7.1/10 rating on imdb for me. However, this film took me off the radar by how amazing the film was. Almost everything about this film is great. And all I'd like to say to anyone is to just see this film, it's amazing. I've given the film a 10/10 because I believe the rating must be higher. Although I'd give this film an 8.5/10.
- DirectorSeverin FialaVeronika FranzStarsLukas SchwarzElias SchwarzSusanne WuestTwin boys move to a new house with their mother after she has face-changing cosmetic surgery, but under the bandages is someone the boys don't recognize.8.5/10
- DirectorTravis KnightStarsCharlize TheronArt ParkinsonMatthew McConaugheyA young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.As soon as I heard about this movie, I attempted to avoid every bit of information before going in, and when I went in my cinema I was *beep* stunned by what I saw. The characters are enjoyable, the story is interesting, and the presentation is probably the best I've ever seen for Stop motion. Watch this now, Laika deserves the revenue for a phenomenally crafted animation. 8.5/10
- DirectorDuke JohnsonCharlie KaufmanStarsDavid ThewlisJennifer Jason LeighTom NoonanA man crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary. This film went unfairly under the radar for me, if I knew about this film back then I would've seen this film to give the Directors' the credit they deserve. However, I didn't know who Charlie Kaufman was then. But thanks to YMS I'm aware of Charlie Kaufman and I'm tempted to see of Kaufman's films after seeing this film. This film would've been right at the top of the list if I this film came out earlier.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.Deadpool was a blast to watch, the movie had caught all of my expectations and presented them in the best way it could've presented them. Deadpool was in my opinion an important movie, it told studios to not restrain their movies to a puny 12A(PG-13). As well as point out the horrible cliche's of superhero movies, Deadpool was a very delightful movie to watch, a great cinematic experience. And sure Deadpool isn't the best movie ever, but it was fun and clever. Which was what I wanted. 8.1/10
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRussell CroweRyan GoslingAngourie RiceIn 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.I feel absolutely gutted I missed this film at the cinema, but as soon as I blinked it went. Regardless, The Nice Guys is probably one of the most fun experiences I've had with a movie this year. Everything about the movie works, to the visuals, to the music choices, and style. The film also proved Gosling could handle more characters really well. Definitely one of my favourites of the year, as well as probably the most underrated film on this list.
- DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale.I first found out about this movie from YMS, it was just after I saw Arrival, and I wanted to see another movie with Amy Adams. After hearing a little bit of the movie from YMS's review, I decided to go into the movie blind, and out-came a compelling narrative. The cinematography was quite eye-catching, and the performances were some of the best I've seen this year.
The ending of the movie was very interesting leaving lots of questions to the viewer. Allowing them to come up with their own predictions for the film as a whole. The acting by Jake Gwyllenhall was some of the best I'd seen from him, I will be *beep* shocked if he doesn't get an Oscar nomination for this.
I'm glad I was able to see this film at cinemas before it left the big screen, it was a small audience with little noise. However, it's a massive *beep* downer this movie made less than its budget, I reckon the film may become a bit of a cult film from the repeated midnight showings, but we'll wait and see. Right now this movie is really underrated. - DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsElle FanningChristina HendricksKeanu ReevesAn aspiring model, Jesse, is new to Los Angeles. However, her beauty and youth, which generate intense fascination and jealousy within the fashion industry, may prove themselves sinister.Loving Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, I decided to watch some of his other movies that showcase the neon lighting and shocking use of brutality. Both I adore. And so I brought Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon, to watch more of the stylish movies. And sure, The Neon Demon wasn't just as good as Drive, but it was still very stylistic and brutal. The lighting was very fun to look at, and to match with the visuals, followed a heavily euphoric soundtrack by Cliff Martinez which really set the mood for the film, and told the story with its visual story telling. Everyone put in a good performance in the movie, and the third act in the movie is one of the most brutal I've ever seen this year.
I'm sure to look out for more of Refn's work. 7.5/10 - DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieAn isolated Puritan family in 1630s New England comes unraveled by the forces of witchcraft and possession.
- DirectorAndrzej ZulawskiStarsSabine AzémaJean-François BalmerJonathan GenetA young man, hoping to write a novel, visits a French guest-house with a friend, he but finds himself distracted by a strange mystery and the stranger inhabitants of the home.I wasn't a fan of Cosmos when I first watched the film, as I didn't have a clue at to what the film meant. And still, I don't know what the film entirely means. Although I was able to catch onto its great statements about film and literature. And no matter what we do, it will always result with nothing.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsTom HanksAaron EckhartLaura LinneyWhen pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger lands his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew, some consider him a hero while others think he was reckless.
