while i feel as though there are some conflicting points within the atmosphere (the film has the existential and surreal dread that mentor bela tarr frequently was able to implement so well) and the family drama (recalling some of the more recent social realist films), Centaur is a fantastic film in 20 long takes that is patient, aural, and never boring. there is a good deal of mystique throughout it, including a foreboding sense of dread that never feels fully formed (although i wouldn't cite this as a detriment or anything). i think it is also the perfect length for this kind of thing: it establishes its primary conflict, its eerie undertones, and wraps it all up in a way that satisfies me yet keeps me wanting more - catrician. - DirectorNasos KarabelasStarsNasos KarabelasThe hero is at odds with his very own existence as well as the existence of all humanity, even as he's sinking into the labyrinth of his thoughts. He's balancing between existence and non-existence. He's loosing his faith in life and he's being trapped in his own personal universe. It is from here that he will try to interpret his own self.Jan-March 2017, feature
the whole here feels a bit weaker than the sum of its parts; that is, the soundtrack is very good and decidedly eerie, the narration has some lovely moments (although a bit too down for a silly optimist like me), and there's some beautiful shots. i think these perks can clash at times and i feel as though certain ones could have been used differently. for example, i feel the nihilist overtones could perhaps find a better place in a narrative film, or the music might have been less eerie perhaps and more tarr-esque dread-inducing. certainly not a bad effort - and, if nothing else, excited me for what more karabelas has in store. some additional notes: this feels like an inverse Walden of sorts, and i think making a "pure" philosophy film such as this is certainly an interesting concept, would certainly like to see more films of this sort - catrician - DirectorScott BarleyThe shadows of screams climb beyond the hills. It has happened before. But this will be the last time. The last few sense it, withdrawing deep into the forest. They cry out into the black, as the shadows pass away, into the ground.Jan-March 2017, feature
perhaps it's more avant-garde than slow, strictly speaking, but it's still fire. i think it's very hypnotic, welcoming, and soothing. it feels quite like nature in that way; while it's still mostly very dark (is sleep's house the night?) and the occasional soundtrack is harrowing, it's ultimately something i want to embrace fully. a modern equivalent in many ways to The Hart of London, although less focused on being an essay film surely. i am also glad that it switches up its aesthetics frequently, never lingering too long on any one idea. great stuff and, like the two filmmakers before, barley has me wanting more of his work. - DirectorLiryc Paolo Dela CruzStarsBabae sa EroplanoTin VelascoDream and memory of two sisters meet, as one grieves for the death of her sister while the other tries to let go of her memories.Jan-March 2017, short

He runs into an Afghan director friend, who has become a political refugee in Switzerland. Over subtle still shots of the Swiss landscape, his voice resonates and transports us between humor and the reality of political facts in an exciting and rich cinematic experience.Jan-March 2017, short
- DirectorOzal EmierVirginie Le BorgneStarsAlex DescasYoli FullerEriq EbouaneyA man walks nervously up and down in his apartment. He is looking for something; in drawers, in a big suitcase, in books. In a small locked chest, he finds two passports. Are they his? Where does he come from? Who is he? Metropole is a film about migration, about assimilation, about the haunting of one's past. It is a film about identity; lost, assumed, false. Metropole tells the story of millions of people out there who leave their homes behind in order to find a new one.Jan-March 2017, short

- DirectorDimitar KutmanovStarsTabita ChiritaViorel LascuAda LupuIn a godforsaken landscape, filmed in transcendental black and white, as if fallen out of time, young Ada lives alone with her ill mother. Her rather lonely existence is characterized by hard work and poverty and as her mother's condition worsens there doesn't seem to be a way out anymore. Ecce homo is a parable about being human, rich in religious symbolism, which dreamily and at the same time sombrely poses existential questions without volunteering answers.April-June 2017, short
