Legendary South Tyrolean mountain climber and director Luis Trenker offers Eva Braun's diaries to Hollywood agent Paul Kohner at the Venice Film Festival in 1948. Film director Leni Riefenstahl sues to have the authenticity of the diaries verified because they claim she was once Hitler's mistress. The story of these two famous opportunists is told in flashbacks, from their brief romance to their ruthless competitive bouts to their backing by Hitler and Goebbels and their artistic successes.

When Heidi, a little girl who leads an idyllic life with her grandfather in the Alps, is cruelly taken from the mountain retreat by a stern aunt, she adapts to life in the village below by bringing humor and goodwill to every situation.

Heidi lives with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps in the summer, and she and Peter play and tend the goats. In the winter, she stays with Peter's mother, and she and Peter attend school. One day a letter arrives from Heidi's friend Klara Sesemann, an ill youngster who spends most of her time in wheelchair, stating that she is coming to visit. The teacher has been having trouble getting Peter to study, and Heidi's grandfather decides to pose as Santa Claus and scare him into it. This is successful, and Heidi helps Peter learn to read. they attend school. The arrival of summer also brings Klara, with her grandmother and her prim governess Rottenmeyer. Heidi's grandfather suggests that Frau Sesemann stay with him and Heidi, while Rottermeyer stays in the village to visit and keep an eye on Klara. Peter is resentful and destroys Klara's wheelchair. Heidi's grandfather is secretly pleased, as he feels that Klara doesn't really need it. Calamity strikes when a storm causes the brook to overflow, flooding the village and wrecking many houses. Klara pitches in to help and forgets about her illness, emerging a healthy and happy girl. Her father is overjoyed and organizes a festival in a nearby town to help the stricken village.

The two friends Johanna and Marlies specialize in designing marketing campaigns at the Austrian Tourism Association. When Johanna was asked to market a remote mountain region in Styria as a new "pleasure destination", her enthusiasm was limited. The die-hard city kid can't do anything with mountains, farms and bells ringing. Her friend and colleague Marlies, on the other hand, loves the mountains above all else and is therefore on fire when she is awarded the contract for the project on Johanna's recommendation. She even manages to win over the world-famous mountaineer Ferdinand Plocher for the campaign - and she also takes a personal liking to the charming outdoors man. Everything seems to be perfect: Johanna can stay in Vienna while the lively Marlies romps around to research in the mountains. Until Johanna receives the shocking news that her friend has died. Stunned and plagued by deep feelings of guilt, she travels to Styria to bring Marlies 'body home. There she also meets Ferdinand again, who had flirted with her uninhibitedly during his visit to Vienna, but is now suddenly at a distance. Like Marlies before, Johanna rents a guest room on the Almhof from Ferdinand's brother Jörg, a bitter loner who has to look after his sick daughter Veverl on his own. The constant quarrels between the dissimilar brothers make Johanna suspicious. There are also other indications that Marlies' climbing accident happened differently than claimed. Although she encounters a wall of silence among the villagers, she continues to research tirelessly. And even though Ferdinand doesn't really help her, the two get closer emotionally. The more time Johanna spends with the passionate mountaineer, the more she learns to appreciate the awe-inspiring, majestic mountains. So she begins to fall in love with the man who seems to know most about the true circumstances of her friend's death.

A secretary at a Berlin newspaper in 1936 gets to write about two Alpinists, as she knows them well. She later gets to report on and photograph her friends' and other Alpinists' climbs of the dangerous Swiss Eiger north face.

Based on real events in the second half of the 19th century, the film tells the story of Bavarian poacher Georg Jennerwein and the rivalry for the affections of a girl between him and his closest friend.
