By the Lake of Lugano, in 1917, Lady Alice Copland, the widow of an English lord, meets Thomas in a casino. The handsome young man has just gambled all his money away. The man is killed in a peasant uprising prompted by a bureaucratic boondoggle. The surveyor looks after the man's widow as his emerging political and social awareness leads him take a stand against government injustice. Another incident, in which gypsies are rounded up by state hygiene workers, further galvanizes the man's beliefs. He photographs the incident, and his work allows him to be accepted into the school from which he was previously denied admission.

The movie explores the love, or lack thereof, of a spouse and a parent, absurdities and tragedies of life, growing-up and death, and humanity under various social and political influences. Ivan's life, and his unhappy relationship with his wife and father, are told through interweaving flashbacks as his wife is attempting to give birth. The title refers to the cigarettes he was buying from her when he met her while down on his luck. They fall in love but constantly fight, while he resorts to crime. The movie's many artsy vignettes vary widely between provocative interviews and dialogue, symbolic scenes of Ivan as a child stomping a gift of bread into the ground, surreal images of death, absurdities of silly bureaucracies and indifference in hospitals, scenes of political upheaval mixed with innocent images of a children's book, and so on. This is a hodgepodge of subtly impressionistic scenes that come together to weave a character study and portrait of life. At times it was a wonderfully surreal and intriguing artistic creation.

After the end of World War II a blonde boy arrives at an orphanage made for the children of partisans or people killed in the war. The headmaster knows that the boy's parents were Nazis but conceals that fact from others, fearing violence by vengeful children. He invents the boy's life story, but the other children get suspicious.

Russia, 1905. Tevye is the only Jew living in the village of Antevka. He is very poor but things change when, as a token of gratitude for a service rendered, he is given a cow and some food. Now, his wife, his seven daughters and himself have access to a better life. Tevye sells his milk and his butter. He is now able to give his daughters a dowry and marry them. But you can't buy happiness. Indeed, Zeitel, the eldest sister, marries only a poor Jewish tailor. The second one weds a young revolutionary and follows him in exile. The third one, pregnant and abandoned by her lover, commits suicide. As for the fourth girl, she is repudiated by Tevye for marrying the son of the orthodox priest. However, Tevye still hopes the best for his three remaining daughters.Unfortunately, this the time of pogroms and one is organized in the village. And against whose house? Tevye's of course, as he is the only Jewish villager. Father, mother and their three daughters refuse to despair. They decide to flee Russia and to seek the Land of Milk and Honey promised by the Bible.
