Movies You Missed: 00s
Stretching from excellent (hopefully in time) to good, or rather very good popcorn, these movies never found the audience they deserved.
List continuously updated as I find new movies undeservedly overlooked.
For now the list is unranked, but when I get around to more I'll take the time and rank them according to quality in my eyes.

- DirectorJessica SharzerStarsKristen StewartElizabeth PerkinsRichard HagermanA teenager is traumatized into silence after a disastrous summer party.Kristen Stewart most certainly can act, and here she proves you shouldn't judge her from the Twilight saga's shadow.
Jessica Sharzer's only feature film thus far, but hopefully she'll get around to more. She's the talent, but when people don't watch this they might not deserve more from her? - DirectorDavid MackayStarsElisabeth HarnoisClea DuVallSean Patrick FlaneryAn artist gets a job at a beachside sandwich shop, where she hangs out with a techie, a flirt, a rocker, a hippie, and a Wiccan.A feelgood movie with heart, warmth and chemistry from the entire cast.
- DirectorTodd KesslerStarsElisabeth HarnoisJesse McCartneyMargo HarshmanNatalie, head of her curriculum activities in high school and riding on a tennis scholarship for college, gets Keith as her Chemistry lab partner. As Natalie can be uptight, Keith proves to be the opposite, even while hiding a secret.Another movie staring Elisabeth Harnois that never got the attention it deserved. The story isn't exactly original, but it's so well balanced it works out really well. The leading duo has chemistry, the movie got both heart, charm and a light story with a message.
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsZooey DeschanelPaul SchneiderPatricia ClarksonSmall-town love story of a young man with a reputation for womanizing and his best friend's sister. One of the better realistic romance stories out there. David Gordon Green's best movie in my book. Great dialogues, well acted and a nice story.
- DirectorAlex HoldridgeStarsScoot McNairySara SimmondsBrian McGuireBroke and alone on New Year's Eve, Wilson just wants to spend the rest of a very bad year in bed. But, when his best friend convinces him to post a personal ad, he meets a woman bent on finding the right guy to be with at midnight. From its blunt start (give it more than ten minutes), it slowly develops into a very well balanced and warm story. A New Year story worthy of being told.
- DirectorPaolo SorrentinoStarsToni ServilloOlivia MagnaniAdriano GianniniAn introverted man's life changes completely when he finds himself attracted to a young barmaid.Italian movie taking place in Switzerland, where a man owned by the Cosa Nostra lives his dull everyday life in a hotel. A quiet movie crossed somewhere between Lost in Translation and Das Leben der Anderen, and almost as good.
- DirectorGuy FerlandStarsTom CavanaghBen FosterRandy HarrisonTrevor is a troubled high school student, thanks to the effects of bullying. This is the story of his fight to break free.A strong story on a troubled High School student, touching on many important topics. Excellent lead performance by Ben Foster.
- DirectorPeter StebbingsStarsWoody HarrelsonKat DenningsSandra OhArthur Poppington, a regular man who adopts a superhero persona, known as "Defendor", combs the city streets at night, in search of his archenemy, Captain Industry.A superhero without powers, but a lot warmer, real and heartfelt than Kick-Ass. Woody is brilliant in the lead, and strong support cast. The story of Arthur Poppington shouldn't be missed by anyone. Well crafted and executed by Peter Stebbings.
- DirectorAndrea ArnoldStarsKatie JarvisMichael FassbenderKierston WareingEverything changes for 15-year-old Mia when her mum brings home a new boyfriend.Kate Jarvis with an impressive debut in the lead. Andrea Arnold written and directed. A more realistic take on the story of growing up without a bright future, unlike the ghetto stories Hollywood most often tell.
- DirectorDamien O'DonnellStarsJames McAvoySteven RobertsonRomola GaraiWhen the kinetic Rory moves into his room in the Carrigmore Residential Home for the Disabled, his effect on the home is immediate. Most telling is his friendship with Michael, a young man with cerebral palsy and nearly unintelligible speech. Somehow, Rory understands Michael, and encourages him to experience life outside the confines of home.McAvoy, Garai and Robertson delivers strong performances on a difficult subject. A movie which probably will make you rethink your image of disabled people and their life's worth, at least until you wake up the next day.
- DirectorIsabel CoixetStarsSarah PolleyScott SpeedmanMark RuffaloA young woman conceals the fact of her terminal cancer to live her life with a passion she never had before.Sarah Polley is great as the young woman finding out she's dying. We follow her own take on how to live the remaining days.
- DirectorAdam ElliotStarsToni CollettePhilip Seymour HoffmanEric BanaIn 1976 Melbourne, a lonely 8-year-old girl strikes up a correspondence with an unlikely pen pal: a severely obese 44-year-old New Yorker with Asperger's syndrome. With only about 20k ratings at imdb I'll have to say too many still have missed out on this one, despite it being at the Top 250 list at the moment. Two unlikely pen-pals and their story is touching.
- DirectorWilson YipStarsDonnie YenSimon YamLouis FanDuring the Japanese invasion of China, a wealthy martial artist is forced to leave his home when his city is occupied. With little means of providing for themselves, Ip Man and the remaining members of the city must find a way to survive. Also only about 20k votes, and this is the movie making me believe in martial arts as a genre again. The bio-drama combined with great martial art is probably the best of its kind in decades.
- StarsPeter SallisJustin FletcherWallace and Gromit try out a variety of inventions - which rarely work as planned. The crazy inventions shown off in short segments by Wallace and Gromit. Original, detailed and beautiful claymation.
- DirectorPierre MorelStarsCyril RaffaelliDavid BelleTony D'AmarioCaptain Damien must team up with Leito, a local insurgent from District 13, to defuse a neutron bomb that has fallen into the hands of a local drug lord, Taha, and rescue Leito's sister Lola.To Parkour actions what Hong Kong of the 80/90s was to over the top actions. With just below 25k votes there's still way too many out there not enjoying the combined beauty of Morel and Besson.
Still. Don't expect anything from the story. This is about the action sequences all the way. - DirectorSteve RashStarsHayden PanettiereJake McDormanJoJo WrightA transfer student to a rough high school tries joining the cheer-leading squad and she not only faces off against the head cheerleader, but against her former school in preparation for a cheer-off competition. It might be my weakness for Hayden, but I've always thought this straight to video sequel is the best in the series. For what it is, it's quite enjoyable as light entertainment.
- DirectorYôji YamadaStarsHiroyuki SanadaRie MiyazawaNenji KobayashiAs the feudal Japan era draws to a close, a widower samurai experiences difficulty balancing clan loyalties, 2 young daughters, an aged mother, and the sudden reappearance of his childhood sweetheart.A new movie with the same feel as the old golden ones from Japan. A different kind of samurai, and this movie is all about the drama and characters.
- DirectorPierre SalvadoriStarsAudrey TautouGad ElmalehMarie-Christine AdamJean, a shy waiter who works at a high-end hotel, is mistaken for a young millionaire by the beautiful and intriguing fortune hunter Irene.French rom-com with a lot better humor and story than most coming out of Hollywood. Audrey Tautou is as always both beautiful and doing a great job in the lead.
- DirectorFatih AkinStarsBirol ÜnelSibel KekilliGüven KiraçWith the intention to break free from the strict familial restrictions, a suicidal young woman sets up a marriage of convenience with a forty-year-old addict, an act that will lead to an outburst of envious love.Fatih Akin's drama-romance from Germany about two opposites sharing only Turkish decent and a death wish.
- DirectorPaul McGuiganStarsJosh HartnettDiane KrugerMatthew LillardA young Chicago advertising executive believes a woman he sees in a café is his long-lost love. His belief leads to obsession, as he puts his life on hold in order to trail her.I'm no fan of Hartnett, but Kruger and Byrne makes this well worth anybody's time.
- DirectorCéline SciammaStarsPauline AcquartLouise BlachèreAdèle HaenelAfter meeting at a local pool over their summer break, a love triangle forms between three adolescent girls, which proves difficult to sustain as they each desire the love of another.French coming of age story from the Paris suburbs. Intriguing drama centered around three teenage girls a summer.
- DirectorRichard LoncraineStarsKirsten DunstPaul BettanyJon FavreauA pro tennis player has lost his ambition and has fallen in rank to 119. Fortunately for him, he meets a young player on the women's circuit who helps him recapture his focus for Wimbledon. One of my favorite guilty pleasures with under 25k votes at imdb. Dunst and Bettany have chemistry, it's charming and adorable much thanks to the mix of British and American and did I mention it's Kirsten Dunst for heavens sake....
Yeah. Another one in the light entertainment department, but far better than anything starring Gerard Butler, Ashton Kutcher or any of the other wannabees of today. - DirectorFred CavayéStarsVincent LindonDiane KrugerLancelot RochWith no legal means left to him, a high school teacher devises a daring plan to rescue his wrongfully imprisoned wife from jail. The original later remade into The Next Three Days starring Russel Crowe and Elisabeth Banks.
This one is better, grittier, tighter scripted and Diane Kruger and Vincent Lindon doesn't do anything worse than the Hollywood stars.
Choose quality, chose the original. - DirectorKim Ki-dukStarsKim Ki-dukOh Yeong-suJong-ho KimIn the midst of the Korean wilderness, a Buddhist master patiently raises a boy while teaching wisdom and compassion through experience and endless exercises. With just above 20k votes, this masterpiece is sadly overlooked. A quiet journey about life, the circle of life and the simplicity of it all. Beautiful, light on dialogue and heavy on vision.
A truly must see from Ki-duk Kim. - DirectorCraig GillespieStarsRyan GoslingEmily MortimerPaul SchneiderA delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. With 35k votes this is seen by many and balancing on the cut-off of this list, but it's till way too good to not be seen by a lot more. Ryan Gosling is amazing as usual, and this drama is original and heartwarming cinema.
