Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes awakens from a coma, and searches for his family in a world ravaged by the undead.

In Atlanta, Rick is rescued by a group of survivors, but they soon find themselves trapped inside a department store surrounded by walkers.

Rick is reunited with Lori and Carl but soon decides - along with some of the other survivors - to return to the rooftop and rescue Merle. Meanwhile, tensions run high between the other survivors at the camp.

After Carl is accidentally shot, the group are brought to a family living on a nearby farm. Shane makes a dangerous trip in search of medical supplies.

As Carl's condition continues to deteriorate, Shane and Otis try to dodge the walkers as they head back to the farm.

Donna dumps Cleveland as her partner in a dance competition in favor of Cleveland Jr., so Cleveland vows revenge. But things become awkward when Cleveland Jr. wants to bring their partnership to another level.

With Carl recovering, the group puts their focus on finding Sophia. Glenn and Maggie go for a trip to find supplies.

In the woods alone, Daryl finds a clue but is injured and attacked by walkers. Rick questions his choices. Glenn gets mixed signals from Maggie.

Ace enlists Nathan Israel, a cocky, young whiz kid, in his plans. Walter decides to enter his colt, Gettinʼup Morning, in his first race, but loses Ronnie as his rider when the jockey takes a tumble. Burned by Mulligan at the claiming race, Marcus, Renzo and Lonnie send Jerry to buy the horse back - and then return him to Escalante to train.

In the aftermath of the barn incident; the group bury loved ones, Beth falls into shock, and Rick and Glenn head out to find Hershel when he disappears.

Liz gets tired of enforcing rules and good manners around the city, so she decides to break them herself. Meanwhile, Jack decides to run for mayor after he is mugged, and Jenna and Paul fear their relationship has reached normalcy.

Cleveland and Rallo create a successful ventriloquist act, but their partnership falls apart after Cleveland takes all the credit.
