- DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsJustin TimberlakeAmanda SeyfriedCillian MurphyIn a future where people stop aging at 25, but are engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. Will Salas is accused of murder and on the run with a hostage.Slow start like pushing a plot through a strainer, confused ideas, some questionable acting, but comes together to be mildly watchable in the end. Essentially a long advertisement for communism where the Bonnie & Clyde characters become Robin Hoods. It's a 'there's nothing better on TV' type movie
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJonah HillAri GraynorSam RockwellA college student on suspension is coaxed into babysitting the kids next door, though he is fully unprepared for the wild night ahead of him.Not terrible but hardly humorous. Some nice messages that are unfortunately glossed over and opportunities to be interesting passed up for the purposes of being sappy. Go in with little to no expectations and it'll be an easy way to spend time. Sam Rockwell awesome as per usual.
- DirectorSean DurkinStarsElizabeth OlsenSarah PaulsonJohn HawkesHaunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.Nothing new story-wise. Not sure how I feel about the ending.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsMatt DamonKate WinsletJude LawHealthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find themselves in the midst of a pandemic as the CDC works to find a cure.Watch it when you're off work with the flu, makes it far more dramatic
- DirectorMichael BliedenStarsBrian UngerGary CohanRobert GoreStand up comedian and marijuana user Doug Benson documents thirty days of pot free living and thirty days of non-stop use to compare the effects of both.Dude was funnier when he wasn't stoned. Wait, that's not meant to be the message at all! Oh dear.
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittSeth RogenAnna KendrickInspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.Best movie I've seen in a loooooong time. JG-L is insanely good, story sucks you in and for a film about a young guy with cancer it doesn't go for manipulative bullcrap, it gets real and it sucks you in. A must see. Be warned though: take tissues
- DirectorJames BobinStarsAmy AdamsJason SegelChris CooperA Muppet fanatic with some help from his 2 human compatriots must regroup the Muppet gang to stop an avaricious oil mogul from taking down one of their precious life-longing treasures.Just fun.
- DirectorSimon CurtisStarsMichelle WilliamsEddie RedmayneKenneth BranaghColin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier, documents the tense interactions between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during the production of The Prince and the Showgirl (1957).Boring, pointless, vacuous, made me actively despise both Michelle Williams AND Marilyn Monroe when before I had no feelings towards them either way.
- DirectorStephen DaldryStarsThomas HornTom HanksSandra BullockA nine-year-old amateur inventor, Francophile, and pacifist searches New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.Not as bad as I was expecting, kid was believable for having potential asperger's, mostly watchable.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJeremy IrvineEmily WatsonDavid ThewlisA young farm boy enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. His hopeful journey takes him out of England and onto the front lines as the war rages on.You're not meant to want the horse to die already, are you? The magical horse that nothing can happen to. Don't even talk to me about the ending though, what a horrible way to finish it, stupid selfish army guy ugh!
- DirectorBennett MillerStarsBrad PittRobin WrightJonah HillOakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players. Not terrible, not great, an interesting look at the inner workings of baseball and the way mathematics can be applied in so many different aspects of life, but in the end not exactly a nail-biter.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsGary OldmanColin FirthTom HardyIn the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet Agent within MI6.Gary Oldman was good. That's about the best I can say about this. Long, dull, unnecessarily confusing.
- DirectorJason ReitmanStarsCharlize TheronPatrick WilsonPatton OswaltSoon after her divorce, a fiction writer returns to her home in small-town Minnesota, looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend who is now happily married and has a newborn daughter.Spot-on performance by Charlize Theron, excellent dialogue and a unique story with depth and insight. Plus killer soundtrack, particularly if you grew up in the 90s. One of the best of the year that should've done better.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAsa ButterfieldChloë Grace MoretzChristopher LeeIn 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.A movie for Academy Award voters, not a movie for real people. A nice idea at its core - if only we actually got to that rather than smothering it with all the extraneous crap.
- DirectorTim HeideckerEric WareheimStarsTim HeideckerEric WareheimRobert LoggiaTwo guys get a billion dollars to make a movie, only to watch their dream run off course. In order to make the money back, they then attempt to revitalize a failing shopping mall.Basically as advertised. Stupid, inane, ridiculous, over the top - but at least it's honest enough to be so unashamedly so it deserves respect for that at least
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsMark WahlbergGiovanni RibisiKate BeckinsaleTo protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.Easy to watch Friday night pizza movie as long as you're not paying much for DVD rental. Fairly straight up action flick, little more.
- DirectorMichel HazanaviciusStarsJean DujardinBérénice BejoJohn GoodmanWhen George, a silent movie superstar, meets Peppy Miller, a dancer, sparks fly between the two. However, after the introduction of talking pictures, their fortunes change, affecting their dynamic.Ok, but not worth the hype it's had.
- DirectorChris WeitzStarsDemián BichirJosé JuliánEddie 'Piolin' SoteloA gardener in East L.A. struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had.Why on earth was this guy nominated for an Oscar? Seriously? I want those two hours back, PLUS interest given that I've raged to so many people about how annoying and terrible and cliched this movie is that I friggin deserve it.
- DirectorPhyllida LloydStarsMeryl StreepJim BroadbentRichard E. GrantAn elderly Margaret Thatcher talks to the imagined presence of her recently deceased husband as she struggles to come to terms with his death while scenes from her past life, from girlhood to British prime minister, intervene.I liked this more than i expected I would. Brilliant portrayal of Thatcher, and one I thought that wasn't too heavy handed, was sensitive but didn't handle her situation with kid gloves either. Compelling watching and educational.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsGeorge ClooneyShailene WoodleyAmara MillerA land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.Well made but I felt distanced from the story somehow. I wanted to be drawn in, the material was there, but I wasn't feeling it. Not bad though and an interesting perspective on an awkward situation
- DirectorTate TaylorStarsViola DavisEmma StoneOctavia SpencerAn aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.Fun and light with a heavy subject. Octavia steals the show while Emma Stone pulls the whole piece together. Nicely made
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsOwen WilsonRachel McAdamsKathy BatesWhile on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.I'm so in love with this film. It's hard not to be swept up in this incredible world, sickeningly nostalgic, but doing so with purpose and leaving with a fascinating idea that I don't think I've ever seen dealt with in film before. It's a movie only Woody Allen could make in these his autumn years.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsDaniel CraigRooney MaraChristopher PlummerJournalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by hacker Lisbeth Salander.Fantastic soundtrack, watchable story, but if you've seen the original this holds quite true to it so unless you're a giant Trent Reznor fan then there's little point in watching it, which is probably unfair of me to say, but it's true. Just saved you $7 at the video store. You're welcome, earth.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsNathan FillionElizabeth BanksMichael RookerA small town is taken over by an alien plague, turning residents into zombies and all forms of mutant monsters. Not as great as I'd hoped. Not self-deprecating enough to be a spoof, not serious enough to be scary, just falling in that awkward in between of 'meh'.
- DirectorAsger LethStarsSam WorthingtonElizabeth BanksJamie BellAs a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion.Don't waste your time. Sam Worthington's accent is horrible, Elizabeth Banks (who I usually love) didn't seem to fit and it felt like she knew it, Ed Burns wasn't bad but wasn't exactly shining. Nothing interesting plot wise either.
