The Films of Mike Mazurki
Professional wrestler Mike Mazurki got his break in Hollywood with Mae West hired him as her bodyguard. West was forced to give her jewelry to gangsters after they threatened to throw acid in her face. The actress wanted Mazurki nearby at all times. This meant giving him a roll in Belle of the Nineties (1934). Mazurki returned to wrestling until director Josef von Sternberg approached him following a wrestling match and offered him a part in The Shanghai Gesture (1941). When the studio felt he resembled Victor Mature, Mike's head was shaved and the 6ft 5in Ukrainian-born Mazurki was cast as The Coolie. From the release of The Shanghai Gesture until Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy in 1990 Mazurki never stopped working. He may be best remembered as the quintessential film noir thug. This image was born when he played Moose Malloy opposite Dick Powell and Claire Trevor in the noir classic Murder, My Sweet (1944). More films noir followed including Summer Storm (1944), Mysterious Intruder (1946), Nightmare Alley (1947), I Walk Alone (1948), Abandoned (1949), Rope of Sand (1949), Dark City (1950), Night and the City (1950), Pier 23 (1951), Man in the Vault (1956) and The Man Who Died Twice (1958). Mike Mazurki's life and career are the subject of my fourth book: Moose Malloy, My Sweet – The Authorized Biography of Mike Mazurki (BearManor Media 2019) – Robert Stom

Installed as the prize attraction of "The Sensation Club", ran by Ace Lamont, she quickly becomes the toast of the town and also marked as personal property by Ace, arousing the fury of Ace's former flame, Molly Brant. The not-overly-bright Tiger comes to town and is set for a title match with the champ by Ace, while the latter also has him steal some of Ruby's jewels. Ruby, no dumb-belle, figuring Ace has the fix in on the fight, uses some of her other jewels to lay a trap for Ace. Tiger confesses, after the fight, to Ruby his role in the jewel robbery while she hints that Ace was the one who slipped him the knock-out drops. Tiger goes after Ace, who, for his own reasons, has Molly locked in a closet.

- DirectorHal Roach Jr.StarsJimmy RogersNoah Beery Jr.Joe SawyerAnother in the Roach "streamliner" series of semi-westerns top-billing Jimmy Rogers (Jimmy) and Noah Beery, Jr. (Pidge) as out-of-work cowhands. This one is a showcase - in some instances too much so - for oft-times screen-drunk Jack Norton (Henry Lewis Clark III) who takes no drinks here but gets the same results from popping vitamin pills. Clark is coming West to take a look at his 35,000 acre ranch that only has 1500 head of cattle on it according to crooked ranch foreman Albertson, which is basically correct since Albertson and his henchmen have rustled the other 4,000 head. Albertson talks the town civic leaders, including hotel proprietor Jefferson Gilbert, into staging a three-day welcoming party for Clark to keep him away from the ranch while trucks are hauling off the cattle. Thanks to Clark's chauffeur Farnsworth, who gives the stranded Jimmy and Pidge a lift, Pidge is mistaken for Clark. Also enter a tour bus filled with the likes of Marjorie Woodworth, Rosemary LaPlance, Noel Neill, Nancy Brinckman and others who are guaranteed to dress up the scenery. The mistaken identity angle carries things for a while, and then all hands - Jimmy, Pidge, Clark, Farnsworth and the Bus girls - end up at Clark's "haunted" ranch house and are involved in a prolonged, mostly-unfunny, sequence where Albertson and crew are trying to scare them away.
- DirectorKurt NeumannStarsWilliam BendixGrace BradleyJoe SawyerIts is NYC in 1928 and taxi-cab owners Tim McGuerin and Eddie Corbett are making a hard-scrabble living with the one tumbledown cab they have between them, and take shifts driving. They have plans to expand and already have their second cab in their garage, lacking only a motor. Tim, led into a burlesque theatre by a rich drunk, Reginald Van Nostrum, who has rented the cab for the day, falls in love at first sight with dancer Sadie O'Brien, who has also caught the eye of gangster Louis Glorio, and the latter is none too thrilled with Tim's courtship of Sadie. The latter though is taken also with Tim, and barely even knows that Glorio has staked a claim on her. She gives two of Glorio's henchman, Stretch and Joe the money to buy a motor for Tim and Eddie's second cab. The two, in an economy move, steal the motor from the first cab and install it in the second cab. Meanwhile, Glorio has his henchman Silk plant guns and booze in the boy's cab, while they are playing baseball, and the police are called. After several hours of intense grilling in which the "thoirty-thoid" degree grilling of Tim and Eddie does more damage to the grillers than the grillees, the police finally release them, primarily because they have discovered that a fingerprint on the planted tommy-gun belongs to a long-sought gangster known as the Frisco Ghost. Silk, despite his name, is not the smoothest nor brightest star in hoodlum circles and has planted a gun taken from (what must have been a big) drawer in Glorio's desk. Glorio is about to force Tim to aid him in escaping the fast-approaching police in his cab, which might have been a good plan if the cab had still had a motor.

He arranges for Lowell to lead the band at the club where Ginger sings.
