Cemal and Suleyman are two good friends who lived in a small village in Antakya, in the 1970s. The biggest commonalities take a journey that requires courage to prove themselves to children in these dual neighborhoods, rather than ordinary neighborhood games.

In Antioch, courtyards are separated from the streets with high walls and their doors are always closed. In Antioch, every courtyard is a world in and of its own. Among its inhabitants are Turks, Arabs, Christians, Jews, Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Alevites, Sunni Muslims.

Mahmut, who does not want to commit murder because of tradition, is forced to leave his love and his village. When he enlists in the military, he finds himself in a relentless war in the Syrian deserts.

The story takes place in Harbiye town of Antakya just before the 1960 military coup d'etat. The economic and political crisis of those days are reflected by the both funny and sad story of a family. The story is told from the eyes of Cemal. Now a famous painter, Cemal goes back to his hometown years later and remembers his childhood.

After perestroika in the Soviet Union there is a total collapse of the Soviet system, which leads to chaos in the country. The protagonist of the film, a foreign student, after graduation does not want to return to his country because of the military coup that took place there. But the Soviet government gave clear deadlines for him to leave the country. At the end of the deadline, law enforcement agencies take the student to the airport. Having escaped from registration, he manages to return to Moscow, where he continues to live in an abandoned house. All these events came from the pen of the writer of the novel, who lives the life of his hero.
