Howard Young is a coast guardsman who has been on shore duty for three years despite his efforts to be sent into action. His nearest approach to sea duty was on a harbor-moored life raft for 21 days as part of an experiment with a new type of vitamin gum for the government. He meets Christine Bradley, a SPAR, sent to take over his communications job and, by things he leaves unsaid, she thinks his life-raft experience was the result of a ship-wreck at sea.

Musical comedy star Jimmy Leighter wants to get away from show biz and his leading lady Winnie Clark, so he joins the Army. There he gets the order to put on a show. Winnie Clark appears in a camp show, hears about his task and offers him her help. He thinks she's doing it for her publicity only, so he doesn't want to know anything about it, till he finds out that she has no such intentions.

Beverly Ross moderates a 5:30 AM radio show with swing music, dedicated to the local servicemen. Two buddies of her brother have a chance to meet her and both fall in love. One of them is a wealthy sponsor and the other used to be his chauffeur. Before she can decide which one she prefers, the soldiers have their marching orders and are away to their destination.

Freddy Martin and his band go on a trailer vacation, taking along Rochester as a handy man. They run out of gas in a ghost town and have to spend the night in the deserted Palace Hotel. The next morning, Ann Crawford and her three friends, Josie, Billie and May, arrive as Ann has inherited the hotel and most of the surrounding property, and she and her friends have pooled their savings to pay off the debts and formed a company to run the hotel. Jimmie Ross, singer with the band, decides to help the girls and has the hotel done over at his expense. Rochester, digging in the Victory Garden he has started, finds a gold nugget and the rush is on. Gangster Pete Hartley and his henchmen move in with intentions of taking over. He succeeds, over Ann's protests, in buying the property from her friends. Jimmie returns and thinks Ann has double-crossed him and they quarrel and part. Jimmie discovers that Rochester's gold nugget was his own gold inlay. Later, back on the radio with Freddie's band, Jimmie sings a song especially to Ann, who he hopes is listening.

Terry Baxter is a never-say-die Hollywood newcomer from Waterfall Kansas, determined to make it big. And does she have talent. Filled, of course, with lots of musical numbers that showcase her many talents.

Edithea Alden, a college girl from a wealthy family, is working at night as dancer in a nightclub. When the leading lady Rose is loosing the customers attractiong, Editha gets her job, but due to the fact that her double life could be discoverd, she quits, the nightclub is forced to close. In college she gets a role in the annual college show. The ex-nightclubowner finds out who his star really was, and gets her back, but on opening night they are arrested, because the former star has found out the truth about the job offer. After that the college wants to expell her.

Radio singing star, Eve Porter, wants a vacation during her show's summer hiatus, but her manager and press have booked her for additional work. She refuses and goes to Las Vegas. When she finds them there hunting her down, she manages to escape them by hiding in the car of a newspaper reporter. She comes out of hiding while he is driving, but everything she says is misconstrued, making him believe that she is a recently-escaped convict, "The Singing Widow". He plans to use this as a story to get back into the good graces of his editor. Through some comic mishaps, he learns who she really is. He then decides to take her back to Hollywood to collect the reward for her return. But now love has entered the mix, and must be resolved with his job and her engagement to another.

Steve, revue producer in Rio de Janeiro, is still in love with his ex-wife Vicki, his star Linda is in love with Steve and Tito is in love with Linda. Because of this they all get small problems.

On a leave of absence from Broadway, Harry Wallace (Harry Richman), the star of a musical comedy, encounters a troupe of untalented showboat players and takes them to New York City. Without letting them in on the joke, he then features them in a new revue, hoping that an unintentionally-funny act will bring down the house.

Fed up with movie life, film star Ted Crosley quits pictures to enroll in Midland College, much to the horror of his manager Sam Lewis and his stooge-friend Willie Gumbatz. Ted wishes to enroll in school under an assumed name but Sam, hoping to nip his school plans in the bud, tips off the school and the press. En route, Ted has met and fallen in love with Jean Worthington, daughter of Dean Worthington, who is counting on Ted's enrollment to save his job. As the hero of many college and football films, Ted gets a royal welcome when he arrives. In an effort to make the Midland football team a bigger draw and pay off the stadium debt, Ted is put on the varsity team--where his exploits don't match those he had on screen, and he is actually a liability. He soon incurs the enmity of Biff Gordon, the school's football hero and Ted's rival for Jean. Biff sets Ted up with a fake fraternity initiation, wherein Ted passes on the tin fraternity ring, taken from a candy box, to Jean. Suspecting unjustly that Jean was part of the hoax, Ted quits school and signs a big radio contract. When the school learns of the hoax, it suspends Biff and the entire team on the eve of the big game. Ted hears about it and his loyalty to the school prompts him to return and square the team with the faculty, and they win the big game. Ted, still believing that Jean was in on the trick, boards a train back to New York. Jean learns that Ted is about to lose his radio contract because he can't get back in time, and suggests to Sam that he arrange with the school for Ted to broadcast from the stadium, using the college band and glee club.

When theatrical agent Waldo Main (John Eldredge) is inducted into the Army, he turns his currently-clientless agency over to his secretary Dottie Duncan (Joan Davis), who decides to organize an all-girl orchestra to fill the void caused by so many orchestra members being called to service in WWII, and joins struggling singers/songwriters Sally Richards (Jane Frazee) and Sue Ford (Judy Clark) in this endeavor. Dottie's screwball schemes to get engagements for the group often lead to disaster.
