Romania

The hero is a retired army officer in the period of transition in Romania from the Communist rule to democracy. As many aged people during these times he loses a lot in position and material situation and is too aged to adapt and start building something from zero. His last resort is the family, but his home and family is also slowly decomposing under the pressure of the times. His elder son dies in a stupid home accident (the film starts with his funeral), than his only other child, a daughter moves to America in the search of a better material life. His life seems to fall under the control of his in-law, a mercantile and much better adapted man, who slowly seems to deprive him not only of his children, but also of his pride and human dignity. The end is unexpected, but if you look back and reflect on what you've seen on screen, it becomes logical.

The film is an adaptation of a novel by Marin Preda, a controversial novelist who died during the Communist rule soon after the book was published. It tells the story of an intellectual, professor of philosophy whose life is crushed after he is imprisoned on false accusations at the end of the Stalinist era. Basically the first part of the film tells the story of his fight for survival in prison, the second describes his tentative to regain his life after being released. His release is actually only apparent, Romania of the 60s asks from him different types of compromises and crimes, but yet his fight for survival is as tough morally as in prison.

The story takes place in 2010, in a post-communist Romania, in which some of those who fully lived in the communist period don't seem to fit anymore. The main character and her husband are about to receive a visit from their daughter, who has been living in the States for the last 10 years, and her American boyfriend. While having dinner with her reunited family, she realizes that she actually liked it in the communist era, that she was better off, and that most of the characteristics of a true communist do gather in her. During the whole movie, she has flashbacks from that "golden" period, and somehow tries to recapture what her life once was, while trying to figure out and solve her daughters' money problems. It is a funny movie, especially for those who know something about communism and what happened then in Eastern Europe, though based on weird yet very real situations people were faced with back than (until 1989).

Occident is a bittersweet comedy that focuses on the growing tendency of Eastern European youth to migrate west. Despite her love for Luci, Sorina believes a life with security takes precedence over romance, and moves in with the good samaritan. Meanwhile, a jilted bride (Tania Popa) and her mother (Coca Bloos) enlist the help of of a private agency to find a proper husband for her, but the wealthy Italian man they select has more than a couple of undesirable traits. Later, Michaela's (Popa) father, a police captain, finds out that Luci's cousin is dead, prompting him to remember when the two boys fled from Romania by swimming across the Danube on an inflatable doll. The cousin had made it across, but Luci had been arrested and thrown into prison.

Ticu fled Romania with many issues left unresolved, the biggest being his relationship with his father. Now there is a whole new family for Costache to deal with, old scores to settle, and painful goodbyes to say.
