- DirectorEric RedStarsMariel HemingwayMichael ParéMason GambleAfter being bitten by a werewolf in the jungle, Ted looks for a cure. His lawyer sister, with a son and dog, invites him to park his camper by her house in the woods and live out of her fridge.Bad Moon is directed like a 90s family movie but with werewolves and brutal death scenes. The plot is simple and unoriginal but it's still really enjoyable. Great special effects and gruesome gore. Long live Thor!
- DirectorChris NashStarsRy BarrettAndrea PavlovicCameron LoveWhen a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 70-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.In a Violent Nature is the best Slasher love letter since the Hatchet series. Playing all the tropes from the genre and making something fresh out of them. Creative kills and gore galore! Yoga death!
- DirectorDutch MarichStarsSuziey BlockEric MencisDavid MoralesIn July 2017, an outdoor enthusiast went missing in northern Nevada. He was never located. Friends and loved ones recall the events and, for the first time, talk about the horrific conclusion to his fate.Horror in the high desert makes the most out of what seems a super small budget. Faux-documentary style, the performances are somewhat credible. I think they stretch the mystery for far too long before showing anything interesting.
- DirectorJosh ForbesStarsJonah RayKiran DeolRandee HellerStruggling prog-rock musician William Brown finds himself in a living nightmare when he accidentally kills Vlad, the neighbor from hell.Destroy all Neighbors is just insane. Tons of fun is to be had here if you take it for what it is. It oozes creativity and doesn't take itself seriously. I can't help but to connect with it being a struggling musician myself.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.Saw it again in the theatre for its 40th anniversary. It's still an unbeatable classic. Tense, dirty, mean spirited and vile. Thank you Tobe Hooper
- DirectorKyle Edward BallStarsLucas PaulDali Rose TetreaultRoss PaulTwo children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.Skinamarink is an odd one. I would've rated it lower because its a very demanding watch but I respect the way that it sticks to is concept all the way through with no compromise. Be warned lots of wall staring ahead!
- DirectorMichael MohanStarsSydney SweeneyÁlvaro MorteSimona TabascoCecilia, a woman of devout faith, is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent. But it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets.Immaculate is far from being spotless. It's got a great cast and seemed to have benefited from a decent budget. However the cinematography is rather bland and uninspired. Similarly the story adds nothing new to this classic tale.
- CreatorNick AntoscaStarsBrandon ScottMarina Stephenson KerrAbigail PniowskyAn anthology series based on popular Internet Creepypastas Candle Cove, The No-End House, Butcher's Block, and The Dream Door.Season 1: Candle Cove
I can safely say that this is what I consider one of the best modern horror show ever made. Season 1 is pure nightmare fuel. The fact that it's mostly set during the day is a feat in itself. The build up of mystery, tension and things that gets under your skin is marvelous. This will stay in your subconscious for a long time. - DirectorBenjamin BarfootStarsJames Harper-JonesRupert TurnbullJulia BrownA boy and his stepmother fear for their safety after an eerie creature resembling the boy's recently deceased father visits them.Daddy's Head has a lot going for it. Further proving that horror is most effective when it serves as metaphor for frightening real life challenges. It's beautifully shot. The actors delivery is strong and uncompromising. It's tense, sad and creepy throughout. The underlying themes here are very similar to Takashi Miike's Visitor Q.
- DirectorCharles B. PierceStarsBen JohnsonAndrew PrineDawn WellsThe story of a berserk, hooded killer who terrorized the border town of Texarkana, Arkansas in 1946--leaving no fewer than five murder victims in his wake. He was never caught. Based on one of America's most baffling murder cases. This is a rewatch. I remember the first time I came in contact with TTTDS was watching the sequel. Not only the title was heavy but the movie as well. Then I found out about the original not long after. This is a weird one for me, as much as the sequel is bleak this one is a bit all over the place. The scenes with the Phantom are tense, violent and memorable. The movie however starts by wanting to be an era piece and give us good context of the socio-political and economic setting of Texarkana post WWII. After a while it veers off into slapstick comedy which feel a bit out of place since its based on true events and the first 20 min is much more stern and realistic. It's like watch two movies at the same time. Never the less it is really enjoyable.
- DirectorDamian Mc CarthyStarsCarolyn BrackenGwilym LeeSteve WallA psychic medium attempts to uncover the truth behind her sister's murder at the site of the crime.Oddity seems to be really loved by horror critics. I don't actually know what to think of it. On one hand it offers really interesting characters and themes but is undermined by the main story line that really reminds me of those cheap soap opera twists. There's many revolving pieces that we don't get to explore in depth. Its one of those rare occasions where I think this would have benefited from being made in mini serie instead of a feature film. All in all its a good watch, pretty creepy but underdeveloped.
- DirectorRobert MorganStarsAisling FranciosiStella GonetTom YorkA stop-motion animator struggles to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother.Stopmotion to my understanding tackles themes that might not connect with everyone. The inner struggle of finding your own voice as an artist. Comparing yourself to the legacy of accomplished artists. Who is in the driver's seat when creating, yourself? or are you just a vessel for the unseen hands of creation? Is suffering needed to create something relevant? It's very powerful for people that had to come in contact with those questions. To others it might end up being just a weird arthouse movie with cool stopmotion animations.
- DirectorsCameron CairnesColin CairnesStarsDavid DastmalchianLaura GordonIan BlissA live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms.Late night with the devil is a very engenious piece of story telling. The context and subjects keeps you guessing at every turn and is unpredictable throughout the first watch. It also got many references to real life people and events which is an added bonus if you know about them. It's a really fun watch reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow. Entertaining horror with clever twists! Love it!
- DirectorDemián RugnaStarsEzequiel RodríguezDemián SalomónSilvina SabaterIn a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to "give birth" to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body, only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos. One of the most original possession movies since The last Exorcism. Poignant and terrifying. A modern classic in my book!
- DirectorsRodney AscherJulian BarrattRobert BoocheckStarsEric JacobusAndy NymanSimon BarrettAnother 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.I'm not a huge fan of anthologies in general. This one was decent with some of the shorts more original than others. They seem to have a decent budget this time around. Good, entertaining but nothing super memorable.
- DirectorAlice LoweStarsAlice LoweDan Renton SkinnerJo HartleyWidow Ruth is seven months pregnant when, believing herself to be guided by her unborn baby, she embarks on a homicidal rampage, dispatching anyone who stands in her way.Prevenge is much more a Black Comedy than a horror film. Being British the humour is snarky and dark. The plot is pretty sad but the movie maintains a good balance between comedy and drama. In terms of horror content it's pretty tame and the violence that is there is somewhat underwhelming. All in all its an entertaining movie with some good actors but the horror aspect could've been better exploited.
- DirectorTaneli MustonenStarsNelly Hirst-GeeMimosa WillamoMikael GabrielEvery camper's worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent.Lake Bodom is a beautifully shot movie with good performances throughout. It tries to so something smart with the Slasher genre but falls flat by shoehorning twists one after the other. Still, it's worth watching until the end. The tow truck scene is a feat in itself and is utterly beautiful.
- StarsPatrick AlbanesiusPeter XifoRyan AlessiPrimal Screen is a documentary about a person's childhood fear of ventriloquist dummies and dolls due to the uncanny valley.
- DirectorFlying LotusStarsHannibal BuressGeorge ClintonDavid FirthEvents unfold after a devastating earthquake in Los Angeles.
- DirectorsSeverin FialaVeronika FranzStarsAnja PlaschgMaria HofstätterDavid ScheidAustria in the 18th century. Forests surround villages. Killing a baby gets a woman sentenced to death. Agnes readies for married life with her beloved. But her mind and heart grow heavy. A gloomy path alone, evil thoughts arising. The devil's bath is a great example of a director that uses Horror to speak about the human experience and hardships. Although it's a historical movie it tackles subjects that are still really relevant today. It's masterfully done and never falls into melodrama or cheesy territory. It's also visually striking and bold. It's not a feel good movie but it's a very rewarding watch. Cudos!
- DirectorFritz KierschStarsPeter HortonLinda HamiltonR.G. ArmstrongA young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed.
- DirectorKarim OuelhajStarsEline SchumacherBenjamin RamonHélène MoorMegalomaniac questions the invisible line between victim and executioner and how it is crossed. A film about the weight of patriarchy and the illusion of Manichaeism.
- DirectorOle BornedalStarsNicolas BroUlrich ThomsenMia LyhneTwo Danish BFFs have lost interest in their wives and consider divorce, but end up getting drunk and hiring a Russian hitman online instead. The Russian flies in. Unfortunately, their wives get to know the Russian as well.
- DirectorSteven DeGennaroStarsCarter RoyAlena von StroheimChris O'BrienA group of filmmakers set out to make the first 3D found footage horror movie, but find themselves in a found footage horror movie when the evil entity from their film escapes into their behind-the-scenes footage.I almost made it to the end. Maybe it's better in 3D but I just didn't connect with it...
- DirectorChristophe DerooStarsRusty JoinerSigrid La ChapelleRhoda PellA door-to-door salesman questions his sanity when stranded in a deserted town and threatened by residents who mistake him for a killer. It's bold, stylish and brutal. You're gonna come out of it with more questions than answer but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and concept!
