After meeting each other as fellow employees at J.B. Martin Co., forthright twenty-two year old Bobby Halevy and twenty-five year old Rims Rosson, who has his head in the clouds in coming up with one useless invention after another, fall in love and get married. The marriage is despite Bobby treating this, her first job, as an experience like everything she does and not as a means to become a "Mrs." like many other women, such as her colleague Gert Mills, seem to do. And on the advice of her older game-playing married sister Florrie Sands, Bobby also resorted to "tricks", so unlike the way she usually acts, to get Rims to marry her instead of he accepting his dream job in the Philippines to pursue one of his more practical invention ideas. Although they love each other, Bobby and Rims hit one hurdle after another as wife and husband, those hurdles largely outside of their control. As such, Bobby has to decide what to do to bring happiness back into her and Rims' lives, those actions which may make her resort to further games. Beyond having Florrie and her husband Willie Sands and her parents' own marriages as examples, each couple who truly loves each other despite their own problems, Bobby will also have the direct advice of both Florrie and her father Henry Halevy, a bookkeeper at Martin who has always had his own special thoughts of what he has wanted for his youngest daughter.

Betty doesn't know what Barry does for a living, but because he has different dogs on each walk, he implies he works in his family's dog breeding business. In reality, he is a poor dog walker, he only doing this job as he, a recent journalism graduate, can't get a job as a reporter, despite he constantly at the offices of the Evening Star newspaper trying to work his way into speak to the editor/publisher, Horace Mansfield, about that job. Although Mansfield tells him that there are no reporter jobs available at the newspaper, Barry is able to convince Mansfield to hire him in another capacity: as the fall guy. Whenever a disgruntled subject of a story or article comes into complain to Mansfield and to have the head of the person who wrote the story or article, Mansfield trots out Barry as the author, who, using his charms, is able not only to placate the disgruntled subject, but have that person feel sorry enough for him not to have him fired. Mansfield comes up with a further back story for Barry to be married with a child, so that the disgruntled person will feel even more sorry for Barry. Part of Barry's employment is not to tell anyone about the nature of his job. Problems arise when one of those disgruntled subjects is Winfield Jackson, Betty's father, she who accompanies her father into the newspaper office and meets "married" Barry. Further complications ensue as Barry tries to win back Betty without divulging the nature of his work, all the while Betty, her father and others within their circle make wildly inaccurate assumptions about his life, and others stand to benefit from perpetuating the lie that Barry is indeed married.

It is ironic then that the one contest for which she becomes a finalist is the Happy Noodle company's Mrs. America contest to determine the nation's best homemaker as she never has time or the want to do any housework, that burden left to Otis. The two are required to attend the contest's national finals in Atlantic City with all the other finalists and their husbands. There, Emma has to find ways of getting Otis to do the homemaker type tasks required of the finalists, those tasks which she has no aptitude to complete on her own. Otis also finds that he is in a legion of other exasperated husbands who would rather be anywhere else than at the contest finals supporting their respective wives. And Emma finds that she is not alone in doing whatever it takes to win the contest. Thrown into the mix is Steve Walton, Happy Noodle's regional representative for Emma's area, he who has fallen in love with the Foster's pretty daughter, Louise.

Doctor John Abbott is a single parent who settles in the town of Westport with his son Dick, trying to eke out a living for them. He also inherits, by way of his doorstep, an unwanted baby girl, Jean Johnson, whom he adopts into his family, rears and loves as his own. Practicing his profession for pigs, I.O.U.s and a lot of empty promises as payment, he is barely able to provide for his family, yet is successful ultimately. Dr. Abbott is dedicated to the welfare of his community and well-being of his patients (mostly lower-class working folks of the rural town), but must battle a group of miserly businessmen at every twist and turn. He encounters resistance by the local bureaucracy for every progressive idea or beneficial proposal made for the betterment of the community, yet his altruistic optimism is not hampered by the penny-pinching bureaucrats interested more in lining their own pockets, rather than helping the town and its struggling population.
