- 140 titles
- DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsJudy HollidayDean MartinFred ClarkA Brooklyn answering service operator becomes involved in the lives of her clients, including a struggling playwright with whom she begins to fall in love. It's fine.
- DirectorJohn FrankenheimerStarsBurt LancasterKirk DouglasFredric MarchUnited States military leaders plot to overthrow the President because he supports a nuclear disarmament treaty and they fear a Soviet sneak attack.Re-watch. Still an enjoyable film
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsHenry CavillAlan RitchsonAlex PettyferThe British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II.Holy moley this was a disappointing movie. No fun, and very stupid-video-game-ish. I didn't think it was really possible to make boring fighting-Nazis movies, but this one sure managed it.
- DirectorByron HaskinStarsGeorge HamiltonSuzanne PleshetteRichard CarlsonOne by one members of a special project team are being killed by telekinesis - the ability to move things with the power of the mind alone. The race is to determine which of the remaining team members is the murderer and how to stop them. This is a fairly stupid movie, where I don't think they knew what they wanted to do and had no idea how to end it - but it was still somehow slightly more entertaining than Ungentlemanly Warfare.
- DirectorStuart HeislerStarsGary CooperRuth RomanSteve CochranA former Confederate officer hunting for an outlaw who wronged him finds him in Dallas, but now as a wealthy, respectable citizen. Not great, but a genre-satisfying classic western film. Cool night-time lighting.
- DirectorsHubert CornfieldRichard BooneStarsMarlon BrandoRichard BooneRita MorenoTwo men kidnap a girl off the streets, take her to a beach house owned by a drug-addicted stewardess, and hold her for ransom. This is okay - until you get towards the end, where it completely loses it's mind - and not in a zany, fun way, in a "this makes no sense at all" way.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsLloyd BridgesBarbara PaytonJohn HoytSecret Service agents make a deal with a counterfeiting inmate to be released on early parole if he will help them recover some bogus moneymaking plates, but he plans to double cross them.Yay, a new-to-me and entertaining little noir! Not quite a seven, but close enough to round up.
- DirectorWilliam A. WellmanStarsHenry FondaDana AndrewsMary Beth HughesWhen a posse captures three men suspected of killing a local farmer, they become strongly divided over whether or not to lynch the men.Re-watch, although it's been ages. I don't think I realized before that Dana Andrews once had curly hair. Oh the movie? What did I think about the movie? I thought it was pretty good. I was a bit worried it would be slow, as the novel starts pretty slow, and to be 100% honest, there were a few places in the middle where this felt a teeny bit draggy, but it's only just over an hour, and the timing of this release in terms of geopolitical events is quite interesting. Oh the movie itself? I liked it. It was quite good, I think. Unfortunately I watched it over two nights, which probably lessened it's impact unfairly. Still, I'll give this a 7.
- DirectorOtto PremingerStarsRichard AttenboroughNicol WilliamsonDerek JacobiWhen a leak of information in the African section of British Intelligence is discovered, security man Daintry is brought in to investigate.Re-watch, although this is another film where it's been so long since I've seen it, I only barely had a few moments that I thought it seemed vaguely familiar. This is an enjoyable, if low-key little spy story. Nothing blows up, but actors act. Stayed up late to watch it all the way to it's conclusion in one night.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan GoslingEmily BluntAaron Taylor-JohnsonA stuntman, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. It's fine. A bit too self-referential for me, and the "heart" of the story felt a bit lacking, but as a film that is mostly about the stunts, there was a sufficient number of stunts to be entertaining. I didn't bother to see it in theater, happy enough to watch it at home.
- DirectorGeorge MarshallStarsGlenn FordDebbie ReynoldsCarl ReinerTV writer Elliott Nash buries something under the new gazebo in his suburban backyard. But the nervous man can't let it rest there.Re-watch, probably, although I didn't remember it very well. This is okay. Not as funny as it could have been, I thought, sort of lost steam in the second half, but it was okay.
- DirectorFred M. WilcoxStarsRalph MeekerSally ForrestKeenan WynnThe adventures of motorcycle cops, from their academy days, to chasing crooked truckers.Fast-forwarded through a lot of this - poorly paced (and it's only a little over an hour long!) truly terrible dialogue at times/ very predictable plot - although, admittedly, it's a bit more casually violent than you might expect and some decent action scenes and location shooting. Probably, if you were into motorcycle history, you'd be happy to geek out to at least some of this film, but for most of us audience now, it's not got a lot to offer.
- DirectorAnatole LitvakStarsBarbara StanwyckBurt LancasterAnn RichardsWhen neurotic bedridden wife Leona Stevenson overhears a murder plot on her telephone, she tries to piece the puzzle together and prevent the murder. Based on Lucille Fletcher's famous radio play.Re-watch almost certainly. Admittedly this kinda loses it's mind towards the end, (the music does not help) (and if you actually try and think about the plot you're gonna be disappointed - and confused) but I still enjoyed watching it. It was interesting to see how they expanded the radio play. Probably not really a 7, but I'm giving it a 7 anyway, so there.
- DirectorsMichael PowellEmeric PressburgerStarsDavid FarrarJack HawkinsKathleen ByronAs the Germans drop explosive booby-traps on Britain in 1943, the embittered expert who'll have to disarm them fights a private battle with alcohol. This was a pretty good shew. Surprisingly tense towards the end.
- DirectorWolfgang PetersenStarsHarrison FordGary OldmanGlenn CloseCommunist radicals led by Ivan Korshunov hijack Air Force One with US President James Marshall and his family on board. Vice President Kathryn Bennett negotiates from Washington D.C., while Marshall fights to rescue the hostages on board.Re-watch, been ages. Okay, so almost thirty years later, the special effects are not quite up to the modern standard. That's no one's fault. This is a full-on ridiculously silly but still enjoyable film. Do not expect it to make sense, and have a good time.
- DirectorJohn SturgesStarsBurt LancasterLee RemickJim HuttonOn its way to Denver, a cargo of whiskey destined for the miners, is sought after by the Temperance League, the U.S. Cavalry, the local Indians and the miners themselves.Re-watch, maybe? DVD test. It works. The story behind this movie must be more interesting than the actual movie - so much of it, including an intro music, and an intermission - and such a poor sense of pace and poor writing.
- DirectorNorman JewisonStarsRock HudsonDoris DayTony RandallWhen a hypochondriac believes he is dying, he makes plans for his wife--which she discovers and misunderstands.Re-watch, *shrug* reasonably enjoyable somewhat dated comedy.
- DirectorMark RobsonStarsKirk DouglasArthur KennedyMarilyn MaxwellBoxer Midge Kelly rises to fame...mainly by stepping on other people.Re-watch, almost certainly - is that why it felt a bit predictable? Really good looking, perhaps even a bit too stylish at some points, like it's trying super-hard, and good makeup, but I'm not so sure about the plot. Enjoyable, not remarkable, noir. Perhaps a 7 on first watch.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsPeter SellersClaudine LongetNatalia BorisovaA clerical mistake results in a bumbling Indian film star being invited to an exclusive Hollywood party instead of being fired.Re-watch. Watching mostly to test the DVD. While this hasn't aged particularly well, it does get better as it goes along, but after the first bit we almost gave up, and my memory of this film was a bit lackluster going in as well. Somewhere between a 5 and a 6.
- DirectorMichael CorrenteStarsDustin HoffmanDennis FranzSean NelsonLong-repressed feelings of bitterness and betrayal explode when three inner-city losers plot the robbery of a valuable coin in a seedy second-hand junk shop.Rounding up to 7. Has a hard thing to do, putting a three person play on the screen, and does a pretty good job of it. Kept me interested throughout. Maybe helped that I watched it over two nights so had a bit of a break part of the way through.
- DirectorHenry KosterStarsCary GrantLoretta YoungDavid NivenA debonair angel comes to Earth to help an Episcopalian bishop and his wife in their quest to raise money for the new church.Re-watch for Christmas mood. It's another "it's fine" movie.
- DirectorPatrice LeconteStarsJean RochefortJohnny HallydayJean-François StéveninA man steps off a train into a French village awaiting the day when he will rob the town bank. He meets a retired poetry teacher striking up a strange friendship and explore the road not taken, each wanting to live the other's life.At first, I didn't like this movie, due to it's early fast cuts and dark digital screen style - but, sticking with it, I began to find it strangely charming - until the very end, which I didn't understand - I think they were trying to say something profound, but if so, it passed over my head. Still, an interesting thing to watch. Almost a 7.
- DirectorsSeth HoltBasil DeardenStarsGeorge NaderMaggie SmithBernard LeeIn London, a Canadian serving prison time for grand theft escapes prison and attempts to retrieve his loot, kept in a bank safety deposit box, but his accomplice takes the security key while he only has the pass code.Okay Britnoir. I'm not sure they knew how to finish up their plot, there was atleast one loose end and it gets a bit hysterical at the finale, without that really fitting with what came before. But, it did have a Canadian character as the (criminal) lead, so that was a bit fun. Unfortunately, the actor was actually American.
- DirectorRoger DonaldsonStarsMel GibsonAnthony HopkinsLaurence OlivierFed up with their Captain's harsh discipline, a sailing ship's crew decides to take action.Re-watch. Not sure what happened here. Did I rate this a 6 the other day and not leave a note, or have I watched this in the last few years and don't remember doing that? I do know I've seen it before. Took three nights to watch - it's not that long, it was just a thing that happened. Is it a 6 or a 7? Somewhere in there. And the DVD copy we have worked.
- DirectorRobert AldrichStarsJack PalanceLee MarvinEddie AlbertIn 1944, an American Infantry company sets up an artillery observation post, but tensions between Captain Cooney and Lieutenant Costa run high.Re-watch. Probably. Certainly the "let's take this bombed out Nazi-infested town" aspect was familiar. But I didn't remember much else. I just figure I've probably seen it before. I did not expect 'ol Pete to die so quickly, that was disappointing - but I am pleased with myself I now recognize him. This film was based on a play, and you can sort of tell, particularly early on, but it's well-adapted. With Palance and an early Marvin, you can pretty much guess the tone of this film correctly, the exclamation mark is also a clue. It's a bit different from the usual war film, with it's questioning of a particular officer, and a fair amount of talk (see: based on play) but it's ultimately rah-rah. Or at least that's the way I interpreted it, you might find the end more open. I suspect that some days this would be more a five or six, because some days I would just not agree to catch the mood.
